To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BEOH- TOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented oer-1 tain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following'is a specification.

The invention relates to combs, particularly to combs adapted to be worn at the back of the head, as for example a F psyche comb.

It has for its object to so form the teeth of the comb and to associate the same with the body portion thereof that the comb may be held with great security in any position in the hair. To this end, opposite sets of teeth are designed to extend from one edge or a portion of one edge of the comb for insertion into the hair and are so constructed and arranged that they will afford a clamping and locking action upon the hair and prevent the comb from becoming accidentally disengaged or detached therefrom.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of the comb and which may be of any suitable shape and desired ornamentation. ing space 13 is provided contiguous to the body portion as by curving a part of the two inner teeth 14: of each set away from each other and then returning them toward each other. The curvature, moreover, is such as to provide for the hair a contracted clamping entrance 15 into the space 13. By again curving the teeth outwardly at their free ends, a flaring entrance portion 16 is provided which is adapted to readily re ceive and collect the hair and thereby force the same into the space 13 as the comb is inserted. The remaining teeth of either set follow substantially the curvature of their corresponding teeth 14 but are preferably uniformly spaced and without particular regard to clamping action other than that due to their resiliency. The strong outward curvature, however, is retained in order to more firmly secure the comb against being drawn out laterally in the type illustrated, the other portions of the teeth locating the comb against upward or downward move ment. The said remaining teeth of each set will serve, also, as abutments to strengthen the clamping action at the entrance 15 effected by the cooperating teeth 14.

In inserting the comb into the hair, the body portion is grasped and the teeth inserted in a position preferably at right angles to the final position of the comb and either upwardly or downwardly. The comb is then given a quarter turn and the teeth further forced into the hair, which in passing through the entrance 15 is securely locked in the space 13 as well as between the respective portions of the sets of teeth 11 and 12. As aforesaid, the sharp outward curvature of the ends of the teeth further serve to prevent dislodgment of the comb.

I claim 1. A comb, comprising a body portion, and two sets of resilient teeth projecting from one edge thereof beyond the body portion, the inner teeth of the respective sets being oppositely curved to provide a single locking'space formed between said teeth, contracted contiguously to the body portion and substantially closed near the ends of the teeth to provide a contracted clamping entrance thereto, whereby the hair will be firmly massed and held in the locking space, the teeth forming the same being reinforced by the remaining adjacent teeth.

2. A comb, comprising a body portion, and two sets of resilient teeth projecting from one edge thereof beyond the body portion, the inner teeth of the respective sets being oppositely curved to provide a single locking space formed between said teeth,
