VToad wltomitmnhylcncer: L l l Beit known `that LIGEORGE V. PIERCE, of Jersey City, in'fthe county of Hudson and State of New J er-V y j sey, have `invented.aJlewand.useful Improvement in Extension Bustles'; and I dohereby declare that the y following isa full, clcar, and`exact description' thereof,
y`4reference being:had`toythe accompanying drawing l i `forrningapartlof this specilcation. y
y. `This .invention consistsin anovel 'combination and arrangement of bows, "extending ribs, and straps, whereby `thebustlY 'iskept in shape and enabled to support v the dress without `sagging,'aml`provision'is made for itsexpanson, .while itfis prevented from incomrnoding fFigure 1l isa back view of a bustle made according Figure 2 is asideyview-'of the saine.; Figure 3 is 'a horizontal section thereof; andv Figure V4;i`s asimilar view to lig.` 1, but lshowing-the supportingportion extended soa's to lower the bowsv Similar letters offreference indicate correspondingv QA s thefstaysnpporting vcloth of the bustle, and isumadepin twofpalgt ambeye, a, andfroinztop to bottom by a lacer, b, which r. 4passes throughlbolesneartheiredges'. Y y r v Eachof theseparts.isnprovided, at suitable inter# l yals apart, with aseries of extending ribs or springs,` J c, consisting of f thin strips" of` steel, which extend s,co`nnected at the toprby a hook through the cloth in-thedirection'of its ,z leptll'.'
. r i *BtB'are the bows,\`which are of ordinary form, consisting of stxipsofsteel or lother suitable material,` y having arbraided o r` woven covering, and are secured at both `ends to `the bristle-cloth. l
These bows are `connected at intervals `throughout theirlengthby1 a seriesof `ilexible braces, c c, consistw `ing bl tapes securedttheir `ends to the top and bot-V tom ofg the stay-cloth The bustle is provdedwith strings s s for its attachmentffto thebodyofa pe`1s`on,`sucb strings combining Withthe -upperrpart of` the clothto-forrn a waistband.
By `nieansof the stiiening-springs c c, secured withbodv of the wearer.
Y in the Ystay-cloth A, the bustle i's kept extendedrvertically and prevented from rocking up; but as the bows are connected` by dexihle braces or straps they are permitted toclose 11D,k and. SQ prevented from incommoding the wearerI in sitting down.
`The laced edges of the support Arbeing arrangedv down the hack ofthe wcarer they are controlled to regulate the extension of the bustle bythe tightening of the Ia'cer, while to cause its contraction or flattening the hook a, is loosed from the eye, `and the waistband extended v behind and tightened in front, thus separating the back edges 'of said'supports, by which means the bows B are allowed to fall or Hatten onthe The cloth "of the bustle tsl against the lower part of the back of the-person wearing it, and the closer its two parts'are laced the more the bows of the bustle extend from the body in a rearward direction; and if Athe hook and eye, by which Ythe upper edges of the two parts ofthe cloth are secured together, be detached and Vthe lacer sucientlyloosened, the bows will tie close to the person of the wearer.
A greater or lesser fullness is therefore given to the back of. the dress, according as the rear edges 'of the Vclo'thare drawn more-or less toward each other.
'Byapplying the extension strips c to the cloth'of thebustle, and connecting the bows by the tapes or flexible braces e e, provision is aiorded for keeping the `bustle properly extended in a downward direction while the wearer is standing or walking; butthe bustle is permitted to yield and therebypreventedfrom incominoding the wearer when sitting down.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The bustle, composed ofthe supporting-stays A A provided with extending'ribs c c, to which stays the springs B are connected at their ends, and with the upper and lower edges of said stays, by straps.'tapes, or flexible rbraces, c, and adjustable by thelace b, hook and eye c, and strings s, all arranged substantially as herein shown and described. 5
