Be it known that I, Jnssnn H. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barboursville, in thecounty of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented new and usefulv Improvements in Wrenches, of
which the following is a specification. i
rf'he present inventionrelates to improvements in wrenches which are primarily adapted to removing nipples from pipe connections, such as valves, lTs, l. couplings, etc., where short nipples are used, the device working upon the inside of a nipple so as not to destroy the thread th`ereof,fand one of the objects of the invention is to construct a wrench of this class which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness in construction and effectiveness in operation.
Another object of the invention is to construct a wrench for the purpose mentioned which shall include a round or cone-shaped head that is provided with longitudinal teeth for a portion of its circumference, but which is also provided upon its smooth surface with an eccentrially arranged segment located in a slot in the wrench and having its outer periphery provided with longitudinal teeth, whereby when the wrench is rotated in one direction, the segment will be moved outwardly of the periphery of the wrench to be brought into engagement with the article to be operated upon.
A further object of the invention is .to provide a wrench of this class with a solid head having an eccentrically arranged pocket upon its face, the said pocket being formed with a transverse slot for the reception of a web arranged upon the inner face lof an eccentric member which is normally deposited in the open face of the wrench, a pin passing through an elongated slot 1n the web of the eccentric member whereby the said member may be readily removed from the head.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and efalling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral l designates the head for the wrench, the same being round in-cross section, and having one of its ends formed with a projecting, preferably squared stud 2, which receives theV handle for the head. The head l is provided upon one of its faces withilongitudinally extending intersecting ribs and depressions forming teeth 3, and the face or portion of the head not formed with the tteeth is provided with a transverse depression, the end walls of which being parallel with the opposite sides of the head, and formed within the said depression to one side of its straight inner wall is a round enlargement or bearing'surface 4. The round surface 4 is centrally provided with a transverse slot or depression 5, the opposite walls o-f which being parallel and the end walls being arranged flush with the end wall of the depression. Passing through the opposite parallel walls provided by the slot 5 as well as through the round bearing surface and through the opposite ends of the head is a circular opening or orifice 6, the walls of which being tapered to receive a tapered pin 7, and the head or enlarged end of said pin extends a suitable distance beyond the wrench. This pin 7 is adapted to be received within an elongated slot 8 provided in a centrally arranged web member 9 formed upon the underface of a segmental member 10. Both the inner and outer faces of the segment are rounded, and the said outer face is provided with teeth l1. The member l0 is of a greater thickness at one of its ends than at the other, so that the same may be snugly received within the recess or pocket provided in one of the faces of the wrench and lie flush with the periphery of the said head. It will be also noted that when the teeth ll contact with the inner surface of a pipe, nipple or the like, and the head is rotated in one direction, the enlarged end will be forced by the round bearing surface 4 beyond the periphery of the head so that the same will firmly engage with said pipe or nipple. g Vround headehavingY peripheral teeth for a portion of its circumference, saidhead opposite its teeth Vbelng formed With a depresside of the said pocketY sion providing a pocket, a round bearing surface within the pocket and arranged adjacent one of the ends of the pocket, said bearing surface having a transverse slot, a segmental member arranged Within the pocket and partially filling the same, said member having outer peripheral teeth and a central web Which is arranged Within the slot in the bearing surface, the said segmental member having one of its ends of a greater thickness than the second end Whereby when the same is rotated a portion of its teeth Will be projected beyond the periphery of the head, and a pin passing through the head and through an elongated opening in the web of the segmental member fory removably securing the said member upon the head.
