Description

A. c. l-(AUFMANN.
ATTACH Patented Aug. 31, 1915.
2 SHEETS-SHEET I.
ALBERT C. KAUFMANN, 01 GINGINNATI, QHIO.
ATTACHMENT FOR HEADLIGHTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. KAUF- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Headlights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a=full', clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements inattachments for head lights, and has for'its principal object to provide a device which will effectively shade a head light to prevent the same from shining in the eyes of pedestrians or others using the roadway upon which the vehicle carrying the head light is traveling.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a pivoted shield which may be operated from the seat of the driver without eeessi tating any change of position.
A further object of the invention. is to provide a simple and effective device which may be made of any suitable sheet material and which will effectively protect the eyes of persons approaching the vehicle upon which the device is used.
lVith these and other sweets in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will. be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side view in elevation of a head light showing the shield in place thereon in its operative position, Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1, Fig. this av side view in elevation of a head light showing a modilied form of shield as it would appear when in place, and Fig. 4 is a front view in elevation of the Fig. 3.
Referring now to thli drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the head light of the ordinary construction carrying the usual socket 2 by means of which the light is supported. Secured at diametrically opposite points of the head 3 in which the lamp 4 is carried, are the brackets 5, which form stops to limit the downward movement ol the shield. A similar stop 6 is secured to the lamp 1 near its rear end and is arranged to limit the shield in its rearward movement when swung on its pivot.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 26, 1914;.
.trol ling means.
position to permit Patented se at, iota Serial No. 558,701.
The shield 'hereinbefore referred to, is designated. generally by the numeral {Wand comprises an oblong body portion 8 having formed at each end the triangular meiroliers 9. (l ne of these triangular members is; pro vided with an integral depending arnti M), the lower end of which is V nected as atll to the rod 12, which extends rearwardly of the vehicle and terms the cone The triangular members 9 are bent angularly as illustrated in the drawings and the free ends of the triangular members are pivotally secured as at 13 to the lamp place.
.In the use Of'tlli shield hereinbefore'de scribed, the same is pivoted to the'lainp as illustrated by the numeral 13., and upon shifting the rod 12 forwardly or rearwarclly,
1, thus hingedly securing the shield. in
it will be apparent that the shield will he raised or lowered and will 5 and (3, and thus limit the shield.
In the modified form of the invention, which is best illustrated in 13 and d, the main portions of the lamp are designated by the numerals used in Figs. 1 and ih but the shield is designated generally by the numeral ll. This shield comprises thd hval body portion 15 having formed at eaclt'end the extensions 16. extensions are pivotally secured as have formed integral therewith the reduced extensions 18 which are pivotal y secured as at 19 to the operating rod 20. which. extends rearwardly oi the vehicle and forms the op erating means whereby the shield may be controlled. K
. in. the modified form of the invention it willbe apparent that the main portion 15 of the shield lies sothat' its upper edge conforms to the curvature of the inner edge of the head 3 and the lower edge forms an arch across the face or the lamp. lintl'iis way the upper rays of the light are prerented from hindering the sight of persons approaching the vehicle and still a simple and etl'ccl'ive shield is provided which may be easily and quickly swung into its lowered the user to sget the full engage the stops movement of the benefit of the light.
While in the fUlW'fUlll! there has nccn J, shown and described the IH'PIOIZ'Etl embodiment o] this invention, it IS to be understood "that such changes may be made in the combipivotally con- (ill at 1? to the lamp 1 and .edge thereof and the adjacent portion on nation and errengementof parts as will fell Within the spirit and scope of the invention as; defined in the eppended claim.
v v ;Hev1ng thus described my nvention, 1 claim;- i The cemhmatlon with an entomoblle headlight; of a shield formed of a singlepiece fef metal, theinner' edge thereof being coni'entir'ic with and adapted to fit within the outer front flange ofthe headlight, the outer
