This invention relates to head lamps for motor ope-rated vehicles, and contemplates the use of an auxiliary lamp mounted upon the main head lamp and arranged at an angle with relation to the latter, so that the main head lamp can be quickly extinguished and the auxiliary lamp called into use, whereupon the rays from the auxiliary lamp will be directed downwardly directly in advance of 1 the machine to properly illuminate the roadway and at the same time avoid blinding of pedestrians as well as drivers of approaching vehicles.
The nature and advantages of the inven- 15 tion will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as 20 claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through the head lamp construction.
Figure 2 is a front elevation.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of a motor operated vehicle showing the head lamps mounted thereon.
Referring to the drawing in detail indicates the casing of the main head lamp which is open at its top but formed with an im 'ardly directed flange 11. The main lamp is otl'ierwise of ordinary construction including a lens 12 and reflector 13. In accordance with the present invention I contemplate the use of an auxiliary lamp, the casing of which includes a bottom 13 but which is adapted to repose upon the main lamp casing. 10, constituting the top therefor and secured to the flange 11 by suitable fastening elements It. Supported by the bottom 13 is an obliquely disposed rear wall 15 which 1s extended forwardly and downwardly as at 16. Arranged within this casing is a reflector 17, at the forward end of which is a lens 18, the latter being held in position by a rim 19 which is fastened to the forwardly pro] eating portion 16 and also to a flange 20 rising from the bottom 13 adjacent the forward edge thereof. This construction provides an auxiliary lamp which is mounted directly upon the main lamp but at an angle with relation thereto so that the rays from the auxiliary lamp are directed at a sharp angle downwardly and directly in advance of the machine. Consequently when a machine so equipped is approaching other machines moving in an opposite direction, the driver of the machine equipped with a head lamp constructed in accordance with the present invention can quickly extinguish the main lamp 10, and by reason of the arrangement of the auxiliary lamp, the light rays therefrom adequately illuminate the roadway, but eliminate blinding of approaching pedestrians as well as drivers of approaching vehicles.

lVhat is claimed is:
A head lamp construction comprising a main casing open at its top and having a lens at the forward end thereof, a bulb in said casing, an auxiliary casing including a bottom secured to the main casing and closing the top thereof, a forwardly inclined rear wall rising from said bottom and cxtended forwardly and downwardly beyond the main casing, a lens for the auxiliary casing arranged wholly in advance of and at an angle of approximately with relation to the lens of the main casing, a flange rising from said bottom, a lens retaining ring socured to the auxiliary casing and said flange, and an electric light bulb in said auxiliary casing.
