LAMP-SHADE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known 'that I, .LAURA E. SILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Lamp-Shades, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved adjustable shade for artificial lights, such as are employedon vehicles, whereby a portion" of the concentrated rays are cut off, so that light may be shaded from the eyes of persons approaching when either on foot or riding without obscuring the road ahead. Thus my invention overcomes the hazard of blinding ersonsin an approaching automobile caused by the glare of'light. I

Further objects of the invention are sim-. plicity and inexpensive construction.

To these ends my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly described and set forth in the claims.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away of an automobile lamp, showing my improved shade applied thereto, and in longitudinal section; Fig. 2 is a plan of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, a portion of the shade being broken away and shown in section taken'upon the line X-X, of Fig. 1.

For convenience in illustrating my invention, the same is shown applied in. use to an automobile head light, although its use is applicable to other kinds of lamps.

A indicates a lamp of usual design having the usual lens carrying door 2 on its front portion, supported by a hinge 3 and held closer by a fastener of any kind, such as the spring catch i, said lens being adapted to close the usual light pro ection opemng My invention has two main parts, a shield "B, and a shade, vizor or hood C, said shield being telescopically connected with said shade adjustably. The shield B consists of a thin plate of metaljor other suitable material fastened around the surface of the top portion of the door 2, by soldering, brazing Said plate is formed with a concave portion 5 around its edge adjacent the door, which conforms with the shape of the surface of the door, to which the shield is fastened. The lower ends of the shield. are of, greater width than the intermediate portion, the shield being fo rmed withzdownwardly and 'forwardly inclined projections 6 producing ends of sufficient width to permit the shade swinging up or down and allowing any light to radiate upwardly from the lamp. associated with the ends of the shield and the shade, thev slot being formed in one member and thebolt passing through said slot .and secured to the opposite member. The construction illustrated shows the slot in each end portion of the shield and the bolt 10 passing through said slot and secured. to the adjacent portion of the shade. Each slot 9 extends in a curve described from a hinge 5 as a center, leaving the shade free to swing and be adjusted by loosening the bolt 10, and to besec'ured in adjusted position by retightening the bolt. It is obvious that the shield can be'constructed as an integral part of the lamp and that the shade can; be hinged to the lamp proper instead of totheshield, these variations in construction being the equivalent of the precise'form illustrated in the drawing The door 2, which carries the shield and shade can be swung open or closed upon the hinge 3 and when closed is adapted to be held by the spring fastener 4, which engagesover a projecting shoulder 11 on the door.

The invention .in use enables the operator to adjust thev shade in elevation by tilting it so that'the light of the lamp on an automobile or other vehicle may be cut off to an effective line or elevation, without reducing the intensity of the light, and so that it'will avoid the hazard ofblinding a person approaching on foot or riding.
