UNITED STATES 1,451,582 PATENT OFFICE.
nuonnn 2. LOW, or-onnnm oas'rnn, NEW YORK.
, a'rzmcnmnnr FOR nnanmenrs;
.. Application filed September 27, 1921. Serial No. 503,571.
Be it known that'I, EUGENEP. Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oneida Castle, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Headlights, of which the following is a specification. H
' This invention relates to improvements in lamps for vehicles and has for its primary object the provision of an attachment which may be removably or .permanently secured to a head lamp, whereby the rays of light will be visible to persons within the vehicle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which is simple in construction and-which ma be attached to lamps of different makes. itli the aboveand other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawings and pointed out in the appende claim.
In the drawings:---
Fi ure 1 is a front elevation of an auto mobi e headlight with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same with the reflecting thimble in section.'
' Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a side elevation illustrating the manner of applying the attachment to the head lamp, the said attachment being shown in its initial position by full lines, while the dotted lines illustrate the manner in which the attachment is secured.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the attachment removed from the lamp.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the attachment is made.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the head lamp pf a vehicle of the type wherein connection is made with the electric bulb through the medium of a detachable plu 11.
The attac ent whichis formed from a single piece of material, cut as illustrated in.
i g t r e e g e e et i Pleas One end of the tongue is rounded as at .14
and this rounded edge provides a downwardlyextending beveled lip or inner end which extends below the edge of the lens of the retaining ring 16, so as to take. up and reflect the rays of light outwardly from the lamp at an acute angle. The attachment further includes a strip 17 from which the tongue 13 laterally projects, the said strip extending beyond each edge of the tongue so as to provide a projection 18 for insertion beneath the ring 16, between said ring and the lens 19, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The strip is then bent rearwardly over the top of the lamp to provide an arm 20 whose extremity is provided with a hook 21. This hook is adapted to engage an elastic band 22 which is also engaged over the plug 11, the said plug beingtemporarily removed for this purpose.
As illustrated in the drawings, the rays of light will be pro'ected upwardly within the c linder or thim le 12 so as to be easily visib e" by the driver or other persons within the vehicle. With one of these attachments secured to each of the headlights, it may be readily ascertained whether or not the .lamps are lighted. This is a great convenience to the driver of the vehicle as he may then avoid possible arrest and inconvenience due to his ignorance of the conditions of his lamps.
In Figure 7 of the drawings there is illustrated a different means of securing the attachment inplace. This consists in cutting off the hooked end of the strip 17 and bending the extremit of the arm so formed beneath and paral el to the said arm so as to provide ahook 22 for engagement beneath the lens of the retaining ring 16 in the direction opposite to the manner of engage: ment of the projection 18. This provides means whereby the lens of the retaining ring may serve as a retaining means for the attachment and is especially useful in lamps .not equipped with the. removable plug 11.
The invention. is susceptible of various changesin its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
The combination with an electric head lamp for vehicles including an axi ly dis- 5 fleetor for engagement with the lens retain-l ing .ring, an arm extending rearwardly from the reflector upon the outside of the lamp casing, an elastic band having. one end looped over the lamp'socket and means car-- ried by the 'rearwardly extending arm for 10 engagement by the band.
In testimony whereofI aifix my signature.'
