Description

M. HARRIS. 1 Improvement in Hemme rsffor Sewing -Manhines. N0; 1
Patented May 23,1871.
MILO HARRIS, or JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m HEMMERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,197, dated May 23, 187 1.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILO HARRIS, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and 1mproved Hemmer and Binder for Sewiug=Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawing forming a part of this specification," in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2a sectional elevation. a
This invention consists in the combination, with a hemmer and binder having a scroll'i'or turning a hem on cloth, of a plate, pivotedat one end to the shank of the hemmer, andextending through a slot in the back of the scroll,
and terminating at such a point within the scroll as to serve as a stop to prevent the cloth, while running through the hemmer, from turning up at the edge against the back of the scroll and making an uneven hem.
Referring to the drawing, a is the shank of the hemmer and binder; b, the scroll, having a longitudinal slot, 1, in its back. The said scroll is made double, so as tobe capable of turnin g a hem either at its upper or lower side.
0 is the plate, pivoted at one end to the shank a, and of such a length that, when turned forward parallel with the shank a, it extends through a slot in the back of the scroll, and projects forward within the latter at a point midway between its upper and lower sides.
When the cloth is run through the scroll its edge must pass either above or beneath the plate 0, and, in either case, the latter prevents the edge from turning up or down against the back of the scroll, or fulling, and thereby making too wide a hem;
In binding, as this difficulty is not liable to occur, the plate may be turned backward out of the way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The double scroll, provided with the slot f, in combination with the plate 0, as and for the purpose specified.
MILO HARRIS. Witnesses:
SOLON G. KEMON, CHAS. A. PETTIT.
