Description

4 `county of Fairfieldand State of Connecticut, have `inventedcertain new and useful` Improvementsl in Sewiug-MachineGuides,of whichlie following is a speciication. l
This inventionrelates tg a guide having an adjustable pin and a `friction-"roller thereon to provide a center, around 4which the material revolves as it is stitched,'givingla complete `circle of stitching on any `partthereof.l yIt is mnre'especially designed fon 'stitching around eyelets of carriage-boots, curtains, and general carsagtrimmngtworkf In the accompanying drawing- I Figurel is a perspective viewol` guide. Figure 2 is a det-ail of` friction-roll. Figure 3 is a detail of nut and needle-plate. 'A' represents` the needle-plate. B,the guide-pin. ,p 0, the adjustable; nut.`
D, friction-roll. f Q l l The needle-plate is constructed of steel or brass, with the usual opening-.for needle to pass through. p i The slot 1` in needle-plate is beveled on its sides to retain the nut laterally.`
The nut Chasthe peningfor pin B drilled tapering. i In its sides it hasa thread cut to match that onpin `B`. l
y." Xpansion, by actionofthe tapered pin against the `sides of slot-inneedle-plate,to` retain both in a del `sii-ed position. i p y', i y l The pin B is provgidedfwith the tapered screw fitted to' "match nut, andis enlarged above the screw, forrning la shoulder at a. This enlargement keeps a regular sizetbrough the,` friction-wheel, and then tapers to tfpoint.` y V1 V l y "l ilheliriction-wheel.ism'annfactured either of glass I, Josera WILLrAwr DUFOUR, of Stratford, in the I* v y tion by its working on he nut is out from its center each way to allow of `or metal.,` `Its periphery is concave, to keep' the clothV `from slipping over or above the roll. y
Letters Patent No. 112,327, dated `March 7, 1871.

l l The Schedule referred totu theselietlze; Patent and making parl: of the sme.
If' it is desired to stitch around the eyelet of a curtain Aau opening the size of the guide-pin is made, the material placed on the table of sewing-machine, the pin B through the opening, the foot is let down, pressing the material onto the feeding mechanism,
land by its action the material is carried around the pin, thus giving astitched circle around the opening `without any attention from the operator.
By using the friction-roll C on the guide-pin au f anti-friction guide is produced,by which any desired seam, either straight or irregular, can .be sewn.
,f E Lheadyantagesf, I claim for my invent-ion are, that 4by using the guide-pin B' to retain -the material ataU `central point a regular circle is lstitched without guid-v ing by the operator or other preparation other than Y `providing an opening for the pin.
'llhe friction-roll relieves most or quite all the f'rcthe pin as an axlerolling with the work', instead ofthe material having to drag against aA stationary surface*i or guide, the usual way, and a method attended :with considerable friction while stitching leather, so much so that'oii has to be often used-to overcome it.` l
Again, the roll will admit of stitching irregularedged work, keeping `Athestltlll an `even distance from the edge, while the direction of work is easily controlled by the operator. v
What I claim as my incntiom and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination. .with the slotted plate A, of'the adjustable nut C, guide-pin` B, and friction-roller 1), substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to thisspectication before two subscribing witnesses.
v JOSEPH WM. DUFOUR.
