SEWING MACHINE NEEDLE. No. 278,857. Patented June 5,1883.

HENRY BEEwIcK, OF SOUTH BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
SEWING-MACHINE NEEDLE.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,857, dated June 5, 1883.
Application filed February 10, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY BERwIcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles for Sewing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to needles for sewingmachines.
The defect in needles of the ordinary construction is found in their liability tomove upward in the needle-bar and the difficulty in,
setting them accurately.
The object of my invention is to provide a needle adapted to be readily secured to the needle-bar in such a manner as to effectually prevent any accidental movement or displacement of the needle.
The invention consists in the improved con struction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a needle-bar provided with my improved needle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line we of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a portion of the needlebar, and Fig. 4 the needle detached.
A represents the needle-bar, provided with a longitudinal groove or slot, a, and cut away at the point a.
B represents the needle, formed at its upper end with two flanges or wings, b 6, arranged at right angles to each other, so that the upper end of the needle will be angular in crosssection. The flange b of the needle is adapted to enter the groove (4 of the needle-bar and be securely held therein by an embracing-clamp, G, having a thumb-screw, 0, adapted to impinge against the needle-bar, as shown in Fig. l. 7
It will be apparent that by the construction thus described the accuracy of the setting of the needle will be insured, as the needle can only be secured the one way, and that with out the special care and nicety of adjustment heretofore required; also, the upward movement of the needle is prevented, as its upper end will rest against the upper end or shoulder, (E, of the groove.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A needle for sewing-machines, provided at its upper end with two flanges or wings arranged at a right angle to each other, substantiallyas set forth.
2. The combination, with a needlebar provided with a longitudinal groove or slot, of a needle having flanges or wings arranged at a right angle to each other, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a needle-bar provided with a groove, a, and cut away at a, of a needle having the flanges or wings I) I),
set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
