DAVIS M. MELLON, OF TREMONT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.I6E,536, dated March 30, 1875; application filed May 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVIS M. MELLoN, of
Tremont,-in the county of Schuylkill and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewin Machine Attachments and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for attaching hemmers, ruffiers, binders, and other attachments to sewing-machines; and the nature of my invention consists in providing the arm by which the attachments are fastened with a rack, holes, or indentations, and the hemmer or other attachment with a projection to take into said rack, holes, or indentations, for the purpose of holding the attachment more firmly in place, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which-- Figure l is aplan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of one form of my invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing another form of my invention. Figs. 4. and 5' show two sewing-machine attachments with the projections therein.
A represents a hemmer or other sewingmachine attachment, and B the arm by which it is connected to the sewing-machine. This arm is slotted longitudinally, as shown, the usual thumb-screw passing through said slot at for fastening it to the machine. The end of the lever B has a round hole, I), for the insertion of a round projection, d, on the hemmer A, said projection being stamped up or otherwise formed thereon and inserted from underneath. To this part of the device I lay no claim as I am aware this has been used before but the hemmer will sometimes turn and cannot be secured firmly in place. To obviate this difficulty I form a series of holes or indentations, 00, in that part of the arm B between the slot at and hole I), and upon the hemmer is formed an ear, 0, with a projection, y, to enter said holes or indentations. By this means the lever may be swung or turned around so as to suit the hole for the thumbscrew of any sewing-machine, and the attachment turned to be in line with the needle, and when the arm is secured, the tighter it is fastened the firmer the attachment will be, it acting as a clamp.
In Fig. 3 I have shown another form of my invention. In this case a rack, h, is formed upon or attached to the arm B, and the attachment A is inserted in an irregular slot in the end of the lever, with a projection to take into the rack. A
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sewing-machine attachment, A, provided with an arm or'projection entering an aperture in the slotted arm B from underneath, and provided with a pin or lug to take into holes or their equivalents, on the upper surface of the arm.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1874. I
' DAVIS M. MELLON.
