Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,188, dated May 23, 1871.
I, JOHN C. W. FRrsHMUrH, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Sample-Box for Cigars, of which the following is a specification:

General Description.
Commercial travelers engaged in selling cigars by asample are usually furnished with boxes filled with cigars from which purchasers can select one or more for trial; hence the contents of the sample-box soon become so dis- Y l .i turbed as to lose their attractive appearance, which they originally possess when the box is irst filled with neatly-arranged bundles,`
' and it becomes necessary toreplace the disturbed box with a new and more attractive one.
The object of my invention is to provide a sample-box in which some cigars can always retain their original condition, both as regards the integrity of their structure as well as the uniformity of their arrangement, while the same box contains loose cigars from which specimens can be selectedv for trial.
The box is, externally, of the usual shape and size of a ciganbox, and is provided with the usual lid A. rEhe body of the box is,however, separated into an upper compartment, B, and lower compartment O by a partition, a, and in the upper compartment are packed and neatly arranged the cigars for exhibition only, while the lower compartment contains loose cigars for trial by purchasers. The entrance to the lower compartment may be through an opening in front provided with a lid, e, as shown in the drawing, or the opening may be at one end, or this compartment may, if dcsired, be furnished with a drawer.
nIt will be evident that by a sample-box constructed as described the cigars for exhibition can always retain the desired attractive appearance, while the purchasers can select for trial any of the cigars in the lower compartment.
