UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
AARON STAVISKY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL ART PAPER BOX 00., OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A OOPARTNERSHIP.
BE CEPTACLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application filed. June 2'7, 1908. Serial No. 440,690.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON STAVISKY, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Receptacles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to receptacles particularly intended to receive confectionery, such as candies or the like. Much difliculty has been experienced heretofore in providing a receptacle wherein the contents, when composed of a large number of comparatively finely divided, contrasting portions, may be retained without displacement in that portion of the receptacle wherein it is packed or positioned.
In order that the principles of the invention may be clearly understood, I have disclosed a single type or embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle embodying one form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slightly modilied form of receptacle and inclosing box therefor and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the body member of the receptacle illustrated in Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a receptacle comprising a base member provided with upstanding walls so located with respect to each other as to afford one or more narrow compartments, preferably continuous, the walls thereof being in substantial parallelism. Preferably also one or more portions of said compartment is disposed in substantial parallelism with a dimension of the receptacle, such as the trans verse or longitudinal dimension or both, while other portions of the receptacle are disposed obliquely to such dimension or dimensions. In this manner, the compartment is substantially divided throughout its extent into a plurality of portions angularly disposed with respect to each other. In each of these portions difierent material may be placed, such as difierent sorts of candy, without fear of their becoming intermixed or crushed. Thus, not only a more pleasing appearance of the contents may be presented than has heretofore been possible, but a separate portion or portions of the compartment may be given to the more delicately formed or softer candies. Preferably, the compartment is so arranged as partially or wholly to surround one or more holes or openings formed in the base, whereby in the preferred embodiment of the invention one or more holes or openings are provided extending vertically through the receptacle. Not only does the provision of such hole or opening strengthen the receptacle by providing an enlarged number of upstanding walls, but air circulation is provided through the receptacle, thus preventing undue heating of the contents which is highly deleterious in the case of certain candies or the like. Moreover when the receptacle is inclosed in an outer box, an inner space or compartment is provided wherein other articles, such as flowers, may be placed without becoming intermixed with the contents of the receptacle.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, the base is represented at I, it being provided with a surrounding continuous up standing wall 2 (see Fig. 3). The said base is provided with one or more holes or openings 3 having an upstanding wall or walls 1,
preferably of the same vertical extent as the wall 2. The wall 2 and the wall or walls a are throughout their extent arranged in substantial parallelism with each other and in proximity, whereby there is provided an elongated, narrow compartment, which in the present form of my invention consists of a portion 5 disposed in parallelism with the longitudinal dimension of the receptacle, a plurality of portions 6 disposed in parallelism with the transverse dimension of the receptacle and preferably in open communication with the portion 5, and portions 7 which in this embodiment of the invention communicate with the portion 6 and are obliquely disposed with respect to the longitudinal and lateral dimensions of the. box. Thus, contrasting materials may be placed in the portions 5, 6 and 7 without danger of their becoming intermixed or displaced, inasmuch as the angular disposition of the said portions of the compartment and the proximity of the walls 2 and a preserve the desired positioning of the contents. If desired, transverse partitions' may be provided in said compartment, as at the junction of the described portions thereof. If desired, paper lace or other material, such as indicated at 18, may be provided upon the inner and outer walls to overlie to the desired extent the contents of the receptacle. It will be apparent that comparatively narrow portions of paper lace or the like will effectively cover the contents of the receptacle. The cover member of the box is preferably shaped to correspond with the body member.
As shown more clearly in Fig. l, the cover is provided with a top member 9 having an outer depending surrounding wall 10 and one or more holes or openings corresponding in number to those in the body member. Surrounding the margin of the opening or openings in the cover is provided a depending wall 11, preferably entirely similar to the inner wall or walls 4: of the body member.
It will be observed that in Fig. 1 I have not provided the obliquely disposed portions of the compartment, but in the preferred embodiment of the invention represented in Figs. 2 and 3, such obliquely disposed portions are provided which may be varied in structure or shape within the scope of my invention.
Preferably the receptacle is received within a box or outer receptacle 12, shown in Fig. 2, corresponding if desired in contour to the said receptacle and having a suitable cover.
It will be apparent that when the rece tacle has been filled with the desired contents, such as candies or other confectionery, and the receptacle has been positioned in the outer box 12, flowers or selected pieces of confectionery may be placed within the openings formed within the receptacle.
Having thus described one type or embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
Claims.
1. A confectionery receptacle comprising a body member consisting of a base having a hole formed therein, an outer upstanding wall, a continuous inner upstanding wall wholly surrounding said hole, said inner and outer walls being disposed in substantial parallelism and in proximity, thereby affording a continuous, narrow compartment, portions thereof being disposed in different directions, a cover member having a corresponding hole formed therein, and also having an outer depending wall and an inner depending wall wholly surrounding said hole in combination the longitudinal dimension of the receptacle,
and a plurality of portions obliquely disposed with respect thereto, a cover member having a corresponding opening penetrating the same and also having an outer depending wall and an inner wall depending from the margin of said opening, said inner and outer walls adapted to telescope with the upstanding walls of the body member in combination with an outer box wherein said receptacle is adapted to be positioned, whereby an inner compartment may be provided.
3. A confectionery receptacle comprising a body member consisting of a base having a surrounding, continuous, upstanding wall and provided with an opening penetrating said base, and an upstanding wall rising from the inner wall of said opening, said walls being in substantial parallelism, throughout their extent and in proximity, thereby providing an elongated, narrow com-- partment, said compartment having a portion disposed in substantial parallelism with the longitudinal dimension of the receptacle and a portion disposed in substantial parallelism with the transverse dimensions of the receptacle, and a plurality of portlons obliquely disposed with respect to said dimensions of the receptacle, a cover member having a corresponding opening formed therein and also having an outer depending wall and an inner wall depending from the margin of said opening, in combination with an outer box wherein said receptacle is adapted to be positioned, whereby an inner compartment may be provided.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AARON STAVISKY.
