UNITED sTA'rns PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED II. BURT. BITFFA LO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL CANDY COMPANY, OF JERSEY (,YIIY, NEW JERSEY, A ()OltlUItA'lION OI" NEW JERSEY.
DISPLAY-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7', 1908.
Application filed August 9. 1907. Serial No. 387,764.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALFRED II. Burr, a citizen of the United States, residingat Buffalo, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Display-Boxes, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
sides (I and one end a. ithin the tray A will be arranged in rows the individual packages A of chewing gum or like confections. As will be seen, the outside wrappers ol' the individual packages are oi" uniform character and more or less ornamental. The upper surface of the tray A is covered with a sheet B that is printed with a series of panels I) correspond mg 111 S120 and appearance to the In packing various kinds of small articles 1 such as sticks of chewing gum, tablets ol' chocolate, confections or the like, it is customary to cover these articles with individual wrappers and arrange them in rows and layers within the boxes, the wrappers oi the articles being more or less ornamental and bearing printed matter of various kinds. From the display boxes the individual pack-- ages are retailed and as they are taken from the display boxes they permit the bottom of such boxes to be more or less exposed.
The present invention consists in providing the bottom of the display box with a surface that is printed with panels corresponding in size and appearance to the packages contained within. the box so that as the packages are retailed from the box, the printed panels upon the surface of the box bottom will give to the box the appearance of having additional layers of packages and thus give it a fresher and more attractive appearance.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, F igure 1 is a perspective. view of a display box embodying my invention, the tray or main compartment of the box being shown as partially tilled with small packages. Fig. .2 is a view in side elevation showing the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in central, longitudinal section 40 through the display box, the several parts being in inclosed position.
A designates the tray or main compartment of the box, this tray being shown as comprising a bottom-from which rises the individual packages that are placed within the box. Hence, it will be seen that when the individual packages are sold to such extent as to expose the bottom of the tray 1 such bottom being printed with panels in imitation ol' the packages will still give the appearance of underlying packages and will avoid the unattractive appearance which attaches to a half empty box. I
Prel'erz'lbly, the back of the tray A is provided at. one end with a hinged 'llap or support C that will serve to sustain the tray in the inclined position shown and preferably the tray A is set within the body I) of the box that is of usual or suitable construction. hen the box is in closed position, the tray A and its contents will be inclosed within the body .I) and the 'llap or support C will be folded as indicated in Fig. 25 of the drawing. It is obvious that the character and arrangement of the printed panels upon the upper face of the tray A will be varied according to the packages disposed within the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A display box for packages of small articles comprising a tray for holding said packages, the. bottom of said tray being covered with printed panels corresponding in size and appearance to said packages.
