Description

(No Model.)
P. HAMILTON. SLIDING DRAWER REST.
Patented May 25,1897.
INVEN TOR A rromzu-x- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK HAMILTON, OF ORANFORD, NEIV JERSEY.
.SLlDlNG-DRAWER REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,228, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed March 9, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Oranford, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Drawer Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
This invention relates to desks, bureaus, cabinets, storefixtures, and all such articles or devices as have or employ sliding drawers, compartments, or other receptacles for containing or the storage of articles of any character or description; and the object thereof is to provide an improved support or bearing for such drawers or receptacles consisting of rollers so constructed and arranged as to support the weight of the drawer or receptacle and permit its easy movement back and forth,
and also to prevent the twisting, derangement, or locking of the drawer by means of injury thereto, faulty construction, or other defects, such as frequently occur. These objects and other advantages I secure by means of the construction described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 represents a portion of a desk, part of the side thereof, with the inclosed drawer, being in section to show the application of my invention; Fig. 2, a transverse sect-i011 of the drawer and sides of the desk. Figs. 3 and 4 represent details of the construction.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a desk provided with myimprovement, the side walls of the desk and the drawer or receptacle contained therein being sectioned in order to show the arrangement of the supports for the latter, and in Fig. 2 these same parts are shown in transverse section. The drawer or receptacle 3 is supported, as will be seen in each of these figures, on a series of rollers 4, arranged in a longitudinal support immediately beneath the sides 3' thereof. I11 practice I prefer to employ a longitudinal box or casing 5, practically square in cross-section, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4,
Serial No. 641,107. (No model.)
the top of which is open. I mount the rollers in the side plates 6 of the box or casing by means of longitudinal slots 7, in which the shafts 8 of the rollers are free to move, the rollers in this case being preferably rigidly secured to the shaft, the latter being placed in the slots by means of notches or grooves 9, formed in the tops of the plates 6 and communicating with said slots. The box or casing 5 may be secured within the desk and beneath the sides of the drawers in any desired manner, either by bolting the bottom thereof to its support or one of the sides to the side walls of the desk. As thus con structed and as shown in Fig. 2, the lower edges of the sides of the drawer or other receptacle rest directly upon the rollers, the latter being provided with peripheral grooves to receive the lower edges of said sides, thus forming a guide as well as support and providing means for preventing the twisting or locking of the drawer in its movement back and forth, as frequently occurs in the operation thereof as usually constructed. In practice, however, I intendto provide the bottoms of the sides of the drawers or other receptacles with straps or plates 10, of metal, corresponding in width with the thickness of said sides and convex on their lower surfaces to correspond with the grooves inthe peripheries of the rollers, as shown in Fig. 4, said straps or plates being firmly secured to the sides in any desired manner.
It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invent-ion by means of devices simple in construction and efficient in operation, and which are not liable to get out of order or need repairing, and which do not add materially to the cost of the desk. The straps or plates secu red to the bottom or sides of the drawer will prevent any wearing of said sides, and thus keep the drawers constantly in their proper position, and it will be observed that the tops of the rollers when in position are flush with the tops of the front of the casing which contains the drawers or movable receptacles.
This improvement will be found of great service and value in all forms of desks, office or store fixtures, or other constructions employing movable drawers or receptacles, and
especially in such as have drawers of considerable size and,When filled, are of great Weight.
Having described my invention, its construction and operation, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a desk or other article, provided with or containing sliding drawers, or other receptacles, of oblong boxes or cases, one of which is located on each side of said drawers or receptacles, and beneath the same, said boxes or cases being open at the top, and provided with vertical side walls having longitudinal slots and vertical passages connecting therewith, to receive the shafts of rollers, and rollers, the shafts of which are supported in said longitudinal slots, said rollers being peripherally grooved, and plates or strips secured to the bottom of the sides of the movable drawers or receptacles, the lower sides of said plates or strips being so formed as to conform to the shape of the peripheral grooves in the rollers, and being adapted to rest therein, substantially as shown and described.
2. A rest or support for the sliding drawers of desks and other articles, comprising an oblong casing which is provided with vertical side walls, having longitudinal slots formed therein, and vertical passages communicating therewith which are adapted to receive the shafts of rollers, and rollers, the shafts of which are supported in said longitudinal slots, said rollers being peripherally grooved, and adapted to serve as supports for the sliding drawers, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 7th day of March,
FREDERICK HAMILTON. lVitn esses:
