FRANCIS HOWARD ROBINSON, OF FORT WILLIAM, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SELF-LOCKING .HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
Application filed April 1, 1915. SerialNo. 18,626.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. ROBINSON, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of Fort WVilliam, in the District of Thunder Bay, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Self-Locking Hinge, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hinges and to an automatic or self-locking hinge, and has for an object to provide an improved construction whereby a door may be held by the hinge in an open or partially open position.
Another object in view is to provide a hinge in which locking members are provided designed to be readily thrown into and out of operation in order to hold the door in an open position.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hinge embodying the invention, the same being partially closed; Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 1 with certain parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2 on line 33; Fig. 4: is a section through Fig. 1 on line 4.4=.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral, 1 indicates a wall or support and 2 a door to which the leaves 3 and a, respectively, are secured. In Fig. 3 the hinge is shown in use as a butt hinge, though it is evident that the hinge could be used as a T-hinge without departing from the spirit of the invention. The leaves 3 and 4.- are provided with barrels 5 and 6 which interlook so that the pintle pin 7 may be passed therethrough for connecting the leaves together. Connected with the leaf 3 are quadrants or looking bars 8 and 9. It is evident that one or more than 2 locking bars could be used without departing from the sprit of the invention. The locking bars are each provided with notches or reduced portions 10 and 11. The bars 8 and 9 are preferably rigidly secured to the leaf 3 but are adapted to freely pass through apertures in the leaf 4.
A sliding or looking plate 12 is connected with the leaf 4 by means of a pin 13, which be in the nature of a thumb screw and which operates in slot 14, whereby plate 12 may be locked in operative or inoperative position. Plate 12 is provided with apertures 15 and 16 through which the bars 8 and 9 freely pass when the plate is in the position shown in Fig. 1. lVhen plate 12 is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2 the slots 17 and 18 accommodate the reduced portion 11 or the reduced portion 10, as the case may be, and thereby lock leaf & and door 2 secured thereto against further movement. It is evident that more than two reduced portions may be provided without departing from the spirit of the invention. When door 2 is closed the plate 12 is, of course, in its elevated position, as shown in Fig. 1, and the locking bars 8 and 9 are extended into suitable slots 19 formed in door 2, there being a slot 19 for each of the locking bars.
By forming the hinge with looking bars and a sliding locking plate as above set forth, means are presented which will firmlyv hold the door in any desired position without the use of stops or other means acting on the door. Heretofore when an ordinary hinge has, been used it is necessary to use a chair, prop or some movable object in order to prevent the door from closing under the action of air pressure or any accidental movement given the door. The hinge above described presents means which will automatically hold the door in any position desired after the parts have been properly adjusted. In order to limit the opening of the door a head or enlargement 20 may be arranged on the outer end of the various locking bars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a hinge of the character described, a locking bar extending from one leaf to the other, said locking bar being formed with a plurality of notches, said bar also being fixed to one of the leaves and arranged to extend through an aperture in the other of said leaves, a sliding locking plate arranged to fit in one of said notches according to the adjustment of the leaves so as to lock the leaves against movement, and means for locking the plate against movement after the same has been adjusted.
2. In a hinge of the character described, a leaf, a plurality of locking bars connected with said leaf, each of said locking bars being formed with a plurality of notches and reduced portions, a second leaf, means for pivotally connecting said second leaf with said first mentioned leaf, said second leaf having apertures through which said bars may pass, a locking plate arranged on said second leaf, said locking plate being provided with an aperture having a reduced slot for each of said locking bars, whereby the locking bar may freely pass through the name to this specification in the presence of locking plate When the plate isin one posi two subscribing Witnesses.
tion and held against movement When the reduced extensions fit'into said notches, and FRANCIS HONARD ROBINSON a combined guiding and retaining member Witnesses:
clamplng. said locking plate 1n p0s1t10n.. LL HULAND,
In testimony whereof I have signed my E. C. LAW.
