To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY JARozs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Alarm Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a re alarm guard, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish the doorror closure yof a fire alarm box with novel means for temporarily detaining the operator or puller of the box, whereby the identity of the operator or pullercan be ascertained by firemen, policemen and other officials.
Another object of this invention is to provide re alarm boxes with devices which will ultimatelyeliminate the nefarious practice of unscrupulous persons, particularly juveniles, who at the expense'of a city call out lthe fire department as a joke or for` amusement or exciting purposes.
A further object of this invention is to furnish the door of a fire-alarm box with an automatically actuated hand cuff or gripping device adapted to hold ahand inserted in the box to send an alarm,the hand being held without injury thereto but in such a manner that the operator or puller of the box cannot escapev until an oficial arrives to release the device.`
The above and other objects are attained by a simple, durable and inexpensive mechanical construction that will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had yto the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fire alarm box in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partly broken away and partlyin section; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the fire alarm box showing the inner side of the door thereof, and the gripping device in a released or retracted position; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the gripping device in a locked position; Fig. 5 isa fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the device, andFig. 6 is a similar view of another portion of the device adapted tojbe used in connection with that portion shown in Fig. 5.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a box, having a hinged door 2 provided with a look 3 adapted tosecure the door 2 whereby the contents of the box cannot be tampered with. The box may be of the well lmown Gamewell or Star type and is adapted to contain an alarm .sending mechanism which canv be easily operated or pulled, the mechanism forming no part of this invention, therefore l have only illustrated Ythe operating shaft or arbor 4 of such'mechanism, the shaft termma-ting in proximity to the inner side of the door 2 and having a notch 5, whereby the reduced end 6 of a turn-button 7 can be interlocked` with said shaft. The turnbutton 7 is operatively' held by thedoor 2 and adjustably mounted upon the inner end of said turn-button is a curved crank 8, the purpose of which 'will presently appear. The top of the door 2l has an outwardly extending bearing 9 and journaled in said bearing is asleeve 10, which has the'outer end thereof providedv with -a grippingarm 11 terminating in a curved wrist portion 12.
Journaled in the sleeve 10 is apshaft 13 which has the outer end thereof provided with a gripping arm 14, similar vto the arm 11 and these arms extend through a strap 15 connected to the inner sideof a casing 16.
The casing`16 is rectangular inelevation kwith the upper end thereof rounded and inbutton 7. andsend in an alarm signal. rfhe wrist portions 12.of the gripping arms 11 and 14 are disposed atthe sides of thehand opening 19 within thecasing and the wrist ,ofy a hand inserted'in4 the casing can be gripped and held when the arms 11,and 14 are brought together, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4.v
rlhe inner ends of the Ysleeve lO-andy the shaft 18 are provided with curved cranks 20 and 21 respectively Iconnected by a coiled retractile spring 22 which pulls the gripping arms 11 and 14 to a closed position, as shown in Fig. 4. The curved cranks 20 and 21 have the ends thereof provided with va series of notches or teeth 23 adapted to be engaged by the hooked ends of bell cranks 25 and 26 pivotally supported by the inner` side of the door 2. The short arms of these bell cranks I are pivotally connected by a link 27 having [and the arms a rigidextension 28 adapted to be engaged by the curved crank 8 of the turn button 7. To retain the curved crank 8 normally in engagement with the extension 28 of the link 27 a pivoted member 29 is employed, said member being connected to the inner side of the door 2 and pressed by a conventional form of spring 30, also carried by the inner side ofthe door. In addition to this spring there are springs 31 carried by the inner side of the door 2 and engaging the bell cranks 25 and 26 to retain the hooked ends of said bell cranksin engagement with the curved cranks 20 and 21, particularly While the turnbutton 7 is being restored to its normal position after having been turned to sound an alarm. v
y A clockwise movement of the turn-button 7 not only places the fire alarm signal mechanism in operation, but the lbell cranks 25 yand 26 until the toothed ends of the curved cranks 2O and 21 are released, therebyallowing the coiled retractile spring 22 to rock the shaft 13 and the sleeve 10 and bring the gripping arms 11 and 14 together.l This is accomplished by having the gripping arm and curved crank ofthe shaft 13 upon one sideofthe vertical axis of the box and the gripping arm and crank of the sleeve l0 upon' the opposite side, the crank and arm of the shaft and sleeve simultaneously moving in the'same direction.
As the curved crank 8 of the turn-button is restored to normal position by the fire alarm signal mechanism, the springs 31 shift the hook ends 24 of the bell cranks 25 and 26 finto engagementy with the notches or teeth of the curved cranks 2O` and 21, thus locking the gripping arms 11 and 14 ina closed position, until the door 2 is unlocked, opened 11 and 14 vrestored to normal position. The strap 15 within thecasing16 limits the opening movement of the gripping arms 11 and 14, consequently the hook ends 24 of the bellcranks 25 and 26 can be set under vthe endsof the curved cranks 20 and 21 to hold thegripping arms in a retracted position. j f y p It is thought that the operation and vutility of the device will be apparent without further description, and While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications claims.

The combination with a re alarm box having a hinged door and means carried by said door adapted for placingsaid box in operation, of a casing connected to said door and having a handopening whereby easy access can be hadto said means, gripping arms in said casing adjacent to the hand hole, curved cranks in said box movable simultaneously with said gripping arms, means engaging said curved cranks to fretain said gripping arms 'in a retracted position, and means actuated by the`l rst mentioned means adapted to shift the last mentioned means whereby saidv gripping can close to a lockedposition.
3. The combination with a re alarm box having a hinged door provided with means adapted tol facilitate placingsaid box in operation, of a bearing carried by said door, a sleeve journaled in said bearing, a `shaft journaled in said sleeve, grippingarms carried by the outer ends ofy said sleeve and said shaft, a casing carried by said door and inclosing said gripping arms, said casing having a hand hole adjacent to said gripping arms to permit of the means of said door being actuated, curved cranks carried by the inner ends of'said' sleeve and said shaft, means engaging said curved cranks adapted to retain said gripping arms in a retracted position, and means actuated by the means of said door to release the last mentioned means whereby said gripping arms can close upon a hand inserted in the hand hole of said casing. f
4. The combination with a ire alarm box having a door provided with means adapted for placing the fire alarm box in operation, of a sleeve journaled in said door, a shaft journaled in said sleeve, curved cranks carried by the inner ends of said sleeve and said shaft, bell cranks carried by the inner side of said door, and normally engaging said curved cranks to retain said cranks in a retracted position, a casing carried by said door and provided with a hand hole, means arms I 'allow the means of said sleeve and said shaft to grip the hand inserted in said casing.
5. The combination with a fire alarm box having a door provided With a turn button, of a casing carried by said door and provided with a hand hole, a bearing carried by said door7 a sleeve journaled in said bearing, a shaft journaled in said sleeve, gripping arms carried by the outer ends of said sleeve and said shaft adjacent to the hand hole in said casing, curvedcranks carried by the inner ends of said sleeve and said shaft, bell cranks carried by the inner side of said door and normally engaging said curved cranks to retain said gripping arms in a retracted position, means actuated by said curved cranks to lock said grippingv arms in a closed position.
