Exnosxvn LOCK.
Application filed May 25, 1920. Serial No. 384,175.
To all 1.0710111 it m (19 concern Be it known that I CHARLES A. line menu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linwood, in the county. of Leavenworth, State otKansas, have invented a new and useful :liXPlOSlVGLOCk; and I do hereby declare the iollowing to be a lull, clear. and exact dcscrhgtion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to locks, sates, vaults and the like and has for its object to provide an explosive device which will explode when the locks are tampered with by unauthorized persons, the explosive charge being sufficient to act as an alarm and at the same time may be so regulated as to so injure the intruder so that he can be easily apprebended.
A further object is to provide a lock having in connection therewith a hand grenade preferably of the Mills type and so connected to the lock that when the lock is forced open by anunauthorized person the firing pin ot the grenade will be released and the grenade allowed to explode. Also to provide means whereby the firing pin may be held against movement when the lock is being opened by an ZlllllllOl'iZCtl person.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafterset shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure l is a sectional view through a conventional form of lock showing the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view showing the lock shackle arm which engages and holds the grenade firing pin.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the grenade showing the firing pin.
Fig. l is a detail sectional view taken on line il-4 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation oi? the lock bodv showing key aperture, which may be concealed and in which aperture a key may be placed for holdlng the firing pin against movement when authorized persons are operating the look. A
swi of Letters ent. Patented Sept. 12:,
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the lock body and 2 the shackle thereof. Shackle 2 has its arm 3 rotatably mounted in bearings at oi the lock body so that when the detents 5 which engage the arm 3 arethrown out of engagement with the arm 2;), the shackle may be pivoted around on said arm. The lower detent 6 has one of its ends disposed in an aperture 7 in the arm I) and in engagement with an annular groove 8 of the firing pin 9. Detent (3 holding the firing pin against the action of the spring 10 until the lock is forced open by an authorized person or by a skeleton key. The firing pin is normally held in its outer position and when released fires the grenade 11, therefore it will be seen that when the detents 5 and 6 are moved out of engagement with the arm 3, either by rotation oi the key l2 or by forcil'lg the lock that the upper end 13 of the firing pin will be released from the recess l'sl. and will move downwardly under the impulse of the spring 10 and explode the grenade.
The firing pin 9 is slidably mounted in a bushing 15 which is threaded in the bore 16 of the body of the lock, thereby allowing the removal of the upper end of the firing pin from engagement with the lower detcnt 6 this being accomplished by a downward pull on the grenade and by screwing outwardly on the bushing 15 until it is out, of the bore 10. then the firing pin can be moved outwardly until it clears the end of the detent 6 and then moved downwardly and out of engagement with the lock. However when an authorized person desires to open the lock. said person will place a key 17 in a concealed v aperture 18. The inner end oi? the key will engage the notch 19 on the firing pin 9 and hold the firing pin against downward movement so that the detents 5 and 6, maybe moved out of engagement with the arm. oi the shackle 2 without danger of releasing the firing pin and consequentexplosion of the grenade. Concealed pocket 18 may be concealed in any suitable manner however a pivoted cover 19 is shown for purposes of illustration.
From the above it will be seen that a look attachment is provided, which attachment will when it explodes, not only give an alarm, but will injure the unauthorized intruder so that he may be easily apprehended. It being the object to inflict as small amount of injury as possible to the intruder and at the same time to so regulate the charge that it will do a minimum amount of damage to the surrounding property.
The invention having been set forth what I is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a lock having a lock bolt disposed therein, of an explosive device therefor, said explosive device comprising a casinghaving a spring actuated firing pin therein, said firingpin extending through the lock casing and having its end axially disposed in a recess in the end of the lock bolt, a recess carried by said firing pin and registering with an aperture in the end of" the lock bolt, said recess and aperture being
