SCREWLESS DOOR-HINGE.
Application filed June 8, 1915.
To all 411710171 it may concern Be it known that 1, PETER J. CARNEY, residing at Mandan, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Screwless Door-Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of builders hardware, and particularly to an improved hinge, and an object of the invention is to provide a hinge, wherein the cooperating leaves thereof may be secured to the door frame and the door without the employment of screws.
One of the features of construction involves the provision of the usual leaf having a pair of spurs integral with one edge thereof and designed to penetrate either into the door frame, or in one edge of the door, and provided upon one face with a pair of pockets each to receive one side of a U- shaped staple, whereas the other side of the staple is designed to penetrate a face of the door frame opposite to the first face, thereby securely holding the leaf in place.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the hinge constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, showing one of the leaves. secured to the door frame, the other leaf to one edge of the door. rig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. rig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the U-shaped staples.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a portion of the door frame, and 2 a portion of the door, whereas 3 and 4 denote the two leaves of the hinge, which leaves are pivotally united in the usual manner, by virtue of the pin 5. The leaf 3 is seated in a recess Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1915.
Serial No. 32,908.
6 of the usual rabbet 7 of the frame, so that the spurs 8 (which are tapered in thicknesses) will penetrate into the frame, as shown in Fig. 2. The recesses 6 have ad- JOIIllllg recesses 9 to receive the casings 10 upon one face of the leaf 3. These casings 10 have pockets 11. After the leaf 3 is arranged as shown in Fig. 2 a U-shaped staple 12 is driven into the frame 1, so that the flat arm 13 will enter the pocket 11, whereas the short arm 14: will penetrate the door frame 1. Both of the leaves are correspondingly constructed, consequently there are four staples, two for each leaf, however, the leaf 4 is carried by the door 2 and has its casings 10 with their pockets engaging the recesses 15 and 1G in the edge of the door. The staples 12 for securing the leaf l to the door have their short arms penetrating the door.
The invention having been. set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves pivotally united, each leaf upon one of its longitudinal edges having spurs adapted to penetrate the jamb of the frame of the door, one face of the leaf having a pair of casings provided with pockets, said casing being embedded in the jamb of the frame, and means extending into the pockets of the casing and engaging the frame to hold the leaf in place.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves pivotally united, each leaf upon one of its longitudinal edges having spurs adapted to penetrate the jamb of the frame of the door, one face of the leaf having a pair of casings provided with pockets, said. casings being embedded in the jamb of the frame, and a pair of staples having long and short arms, the long arms entering the pockets of the casings, whereas the short arms penetrate the frame of a door.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER J. CABNEY.
