In use the hand of the user is inserted in the socket, and it will be evident that when a blow is struck, the socket will stretch :to cushion `the jar of the blow. The openings 2l in addition to their function of providing ventilation, also tend to equalize the pressure in the space between the lining 19 and Ithe socket.
