To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUnoLr VON 1* noMMEn, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Soroksan n ut 1-55 8, Budapest, IX,..r-'iustria.- Hungary,
' have invented certain new and userul Tmproveinents in Bayonets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its subject a folding bayonet which is permanently connected 10 to the weapon rifle, lance-shaft or the like.
The bayonet can be brought into two different positions and locked therein, 2'. e. the operative and the inoperative position.
The essential feature of my invention consists in a sleeve on the stem of the bayonet, which sleeve is adapted to slide on the stem of the bayonet, and serves to lock the bayonetin either of said two positions. As the sleeve is fitted to slide on the stem of the bayonet the manufacture is greatly simplified.
A very important advantage in the use of such a locking sleeve is that the locking device is quite independent both of the form and the width of the bayonet blade, because locking devices which do not include a sleeve adapted to slide on the stem of the bayonet can only be used with bayonets whose blades are of less width than the clear inner diameter of the sleeve, or the sleeve must be made of two parts fitted together in order that the sliding over the blade on to the stem may be avoided and that the mounting may be effected on the stem itself.
% In the drawing Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a longitudinal and a cross-section of one mode of construction, Figs. 3 and a and Figs. 5 and 6 being corresponding views of other modes of construction.
1 According to Figs. 1 and 2 the stem 2 of the bayonet 1 is recessed from the rear end forward, and is mounted to turn on a pivot 6 on lug 7 attached to the weapon on which the bayonet is to be used; on the stem 2 before the bayonet is secured to the said lug, is fitted the locking sleeve 11 which is normally pressed back by a spring 5 surrounding the stem of the bayonet. The sliding movement of the locking sleeve in either direction is llimited by the cross-pin 3 which is movable in a slot 12 provided in the stem 2 of the bayonet. On the lug 7 on opposite sides of the pivot 6 notches 8, 8 and 9, 9 are formed, into which the rear end of the locking sleeve ill will snap under the action of the spring 5, whereby the bayonet is held in either of its two positions. The change from one position to another is easily effected by the sleeve 11 being pushed a ainst the action of the spring in the direction toward the point of the bayonet, whereby the sleeve 11 is drawn out of the notches in which it is held, whereupon the bayonet can be turned around the pivot 6 into the other position in which the sleeve 11 will engage the opposite pair of notches in the lug 7, the spring 5 holding the sleeve therein.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the locking sleeve 11 is provided at its end with a nose 10 adapted to engage in either the notch 8 or 9 of the lug 7 otherwise, the construction and operation of the sleeve 11 are the same as in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the construction according to Figs. 5 and 6, the pin 3 which serves to limit the sliding movement of the locking sleeve is arranged to engage, itself one of the notches 8 and 9 of the lug 7.
In all the forms of construction shown the stem of the bayonet and the sleeve are of circular cross section because the manufacture is simpler, but of course any other cross-section may be chosen, if preferred; the only important consideration is that the sleeve shall be capable of sliding on the stem. Evidently the locking sleeve could also be used without a spring, being held in position by friction only.
Claims:
1. The combination with a weapon and :1 lug thereon, of a bayonet pivoted to said lug and having a stem, a movable sleeve mounted on said stem and adapted to engage in notches provided in said lug on opposite sides of the pivot, thereby holding the bayonet in either its operative or inoperative position.
2. The combination with a weapon and 2. lug thereon, of a bayonet pivoted to said lug and having a stem, a movable sleeve mounted on said stem and adapted to engage in notches provided in said lug on opposite sides of the pivot, thereby holding the bayonet in either its operative or inoperative position, and aspring normally holding said sleeve in engagement with the notches.
3. The combination with a weapon and 2. lug thereon, of a bayonet pivoted to said lug and having a stem, a movable sleeve mounted on said stem and adapted to engage in notches provided in said lug on opposite sides of the pivot, thereby holding the bayo net in either its operative or inoperative position, a'spring normally holding said sleeve in engagement with the notches, and a stop adapted to limit the movement of said sleeve on said stem in either direction.
4. The combination, With a Weapon and a lug thereon of a bayonet having a recessed stem adapted to receive said lug, a pivot connecting said stem and said lug, a movable sleeve mounted on said stem having a projection adapted to engage in notches provided in said lug on opposite sides of said pivot, thereby holding the bayonet in either its operative or inoperative position.
