SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sights for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to that type of sights for fire-arms which is provided with a wind-gage.
The principal object of the invention 1s to simplify the construction and reduce the cost of manufacture of devices of this character, to increase the facility of effecting adjustment, to make the parts as substantial and compact as ossible and in general to provide a sight w ich shall form a more reliable, convenient and otherwise practical instrument than others of its kind heretofore used.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in two forms, one (Figures 1 to l0) wherein the laterally sliding member is folding in character and the other (Figs. 1l to 17) wherein the said member is plain, the first form being adapted to be attached back of the breech, and the second form upon the barrel, of a rifle or the like.

Referring, rst, to the first ten figures of the drawing, on the tang A forming a part of the gun frame is secured the elongated fixed member or body part a, which is a forging suitably shaped to the guns contour and having at its rear end the transverse cylindrical head b joined thereto by the neck c, whose thickness is appreciably less than the diameter of the head b and whose length is preferably commensurate with that of said head. On the member a 1s arranged to slide laterally the sliding member of the sight, thus described: The part thereof shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 includes a cylindrical portion d of greater length than head ZJ of member a, whose bore is of the same diameter as the head b of member o and has, entering thereto from beneath, a slot e extending from end to end of portion d and of a Width equaling the thickness of the neck o; when said part is fitted to member a in the manner shown in Fig. 2, it may slide laterally on the head b, the close fit of its slot to the neck c preventing rotational movement thereof. Projecting rearwardly from portion d, centrally thereof, is the bifurcated tail f.
The threaded bore of head b of member a receives an adjusting screw g having at the ends thereof the milled heads L L bearing against the ends of the cylindrical portion d of the sliding member. Upon turning the screw and thus advancing it longitudinally in head b one or the other of its heads L L will act to shift laterally the sliding member in effecting wind-gage adjustment.
z' is a post having a flattened lower end y' received in the bifurcated tail f, in which, on a pin c, it is pivoted. The post is formed with an axial bore Z entering the same from its free end and with a longitudinal slot fm,- entering to the bore; at its free end is formed a shoulder n. In the bore is fitted the stem of a sight proper o having the aperture p forming its sighting point and having the lateral fin g occupying the said slot and having its outer edge serrated or threaded. The serrated or threaded edge of said iin Ais engaged with threading formed internally in an adjusting sleeve r which is revoluble on the post, being confined against vertical movement by the shoulder n on the one hand and by the surface f of tail f, said surface being concentric to the axis of movement of the post on pin k so that in any position to which said post is pivotally moved (from its fully elevated or working position to its depressed or idle position, Fig. 2) the i5 tail holds the sleeve up to shoulder n. By turning the sleeve, whose outer surface is il milled, the sight-proper o will be adjusted up or down. 11i? In Fig. 10 a screw s is shown tapped into the bottom of the bore of the post, the same affording an adjustable seat for the sightproper 0 useful in bringing the latter quickly and accurately to an elevation the most frequently required by the opera-tor.
Referring, now to Figs. 11 to 17. On the barrel B of the arm is secured in the well known manner shown at t the fixed elastic member u of the sight, adapted to be elevated in a manner already known by sliding forward or back the stepped elevation block or slide c on which lateral lugs w on the member u rest. The extremity of member u is a cylindrical head substantially like the head of member a of Figs. 1 to 10. On member u is arranged to slide the member y of greater length than the head m of member u, the same having a cylindrical bore e, which is of the same diameter as the head :c of the member 10 and a slot 2 on one side whose width is equal to the thickness of the member u near its head and whose length is commensurate with that of said member y. The member 1 when fitted to member u as shown in Figs. 11 and 12, may slide laterally thereon, but is kept from rotational movement on the head by receiving member 'La in its slot. The threaded bore of head a' of member u receives the adjusting screw 3 having at the ends thereof the milled heads 4, t bearing against the ends of the member y, the turning and consequent longitudinal advancement of which produces lateral or wind-gage adjustment of member y in the same manner as already described with reference to the sliding member in Figs. 1 to 10. The sighting point in this instance is a notch 5 cut in the transverse ridge 6 in member y.
In the rst form at ci and in the second form at y the cylindrical portion (d and y, respectively) has a lip beveled to the surface of the fixed member (a and u, respectively) and conveniently provided with a scale (Figs. 1 and 11) readable with reference t0 a mark on the xed member in effecting wind-gage adjustment. The portion d (or y) being arched over the head b (or the sliding joint between the fixed member a (or u) and the sliding member is materially strengthened-a feature of peculiar advantage in the construction shown in the first ten figures on account of the leverage which will be exerted on the joint each time the post is elevated, especially if the pivoting joint of the post is more or less tight.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z* 1. A sighting device consisting of an elon\ gated body member adapted to be arranged recumbent upon and secured to a gun` a transversely sliding member containing the sighting point, and means to adjust the sliding member transversely, said members having a joint including one end portion of the body member and comprising a transversely elongated head formed on one member and a transverse guideway in the other member receiving and embracing said head, the whole device lying low relatively to the surface thereof which rests on the gun.
2. In combination, a supporting member, a post pivoted thereto, a sighting member adjustable longitudinally of the post, and a rotary adjusting device for the sighting member having threaded engagement with the sighting member and rotative on an axis extending longitudinally of the post, said post and the supporting member limiting the movement of said device longitudinally of said axis and the surface of the supporting member affording limit of movement for said device being concentric to the axis of pivotal movement of the post in the supporting member, substantially as described.
