Description
B. W. LAYTON.
NUT OR BOLT LOCK. APPLICATLON men Aue. 22. 191g.
Patented Aug. 10 1915.-
impwoc F51 W. Lav'mw bolt lock. It has for its object simplicity and economy of construction and is adapted to be placed in operative relation with To all whom it may concern:
J "Ur drnn ermine BENJAMIN mns, Kansas.
- NUT 0181 BOLT LQGK.
Application filed August 22, 1914. Serial Ho. 858,045.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W, Lar- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Nut or BoltLocks, of
which the following is a specification, 'refi; erence being had to the accompanyingdraw- -1ngs.
My invention relates to a certain new and usefuldevlce which I designate as a nut or either a nut or the head of a bolt by the use 7 of a simple-hammer.
YVith these ends in view, my invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter more particularly desc ibed.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and apply my improvedlock and to appreciate its advantages, I will now proceed to describe the same referring by proved locks in position over the head cfthe bolt and another over the nut. secured in I place upon the threaded end of the bolt.
Eimilar numerals indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing. I
1 represents preferably, a disk of sheet metal of suitable gage to secure adequate strength, and cut as at 2 on each side of its periphery to form pointed barbs 3 ad. oted' to be bent at approximately right angles to the face of the disk; The barbs 3 are formed by cutting the disk inwardly from its periphery in opposite directions, the cuts terminating at diametrically opposite points. The cut portions of the disk are adapted to be bent at right angles to the plane of the disk, at the terminations of the cuts, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. TWhen the cut portions are bent to an opposite position, as shown in Fig, 2 of the draw- Specification 0i Letters Patent. Eatgn'tgfil Aug, 1%15;
ing, they provide inwardly curved barbs which are tapered to points at their extremities so that the barbs may easily be forced into the timber, as shown in Fig. 3.
The' disk is punched out at d to embrace the sides of the head 5 of a bolt 6 or a nut 7 secured to the threaded end of a bolt.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be readily understood that when a bolt has been placed in position through a timber 8, a disk 1 may be placed over the head 5 with the herbs 3 driven-in the timber, and that in a similar a nut 7. if placed only upon the head of a bolt, it will be obvious that a nut 2 may be manner a disk may be secured in place over run on or oil the th eaded end bf the bolt,
andthe latter will besecurely held against turning in the tiiiiber, and similarly if used.
inconnection with a not only; the bolt may be unscrewed from the not while the latter v is held against movement.
While I have shown the locking device in the form of a disk and the central openin e square, it will be understood that the plate may be of any other design and the opening in the center may be polygonal-bran other shape, according to the character of the bolt of nut withwhich it is to be used, and it will i.
also be understood. that I do not Wishto confined in any degree to dimensions;
by Letters Patent is:-
A nut lock including a circular metallic disk having a centrallylocated non-circular opening adapted to receive an element to be held, and a plurality of retaining spurs formed integrally with the disk, said spurs being. produced by arcuate kerfs cut in- What I claim as new and desire to securewardly from the edge of the disk and by bending the segmental portions freed by the kerfs to lie in a plane at right angles to the plane of the disk, the faces of said segmental portions being disposed in planescomprehending radii of the disk.
Intestimony whereof I hereunto afix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BEN AMIN 'w LAYTON.
'Witnesses: I
ALBERT Crown, MAURICE WELSH.
