CHARLES H. WAGNER, OF PENBROOK, PENNSYLVANIA.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 16, 1920.
pplication led August 2, 1919.- Serial No. 314,898.
To all whom it' 'may con com:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. VAGNER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Penbrook, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks, of which the following is a specication.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved nut-lock, so designed as to overcome the objectionable features and excessive cost of manufacture of earlier constructions of such devices, and yet primarily to insure the very maximum degree of eiiiciency in operating to prevent theremoval of a nut from a bolt by accidents, or in any way other than manually by voluntary intent.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which demands the least possible alteration in the construction of a bolt, to provide for no change whatever in the ordinary construction of a nut,`to provide means operative to effect a maximum binding of the nut against the articles being united by the complete bolt, and to provide means for preventing accidental displacement of said last-named means.
And a still further and more specific obj ect is to provide a bolt having a single narrow groove extending longitudinally of the axis of the bolt and across its threads, to provide an ordinary internally threaded nut for said bolt, to provide an internally threaded lock-nut for said bolt, operative to bind against said first nut and provided with spaced grooves extending longitudinally of the axis of said lock-nut and across its threads, and to provide removable means adapted to enter the groove in the bolt longitudinally and, any one of the longitudinally ext-ending grooves in said lock-nut, to effect a keying of the lock-nut against revolving with respect to the bolt, said keying means being provided in turn with means to prevent its accidental displacement within or removable from the groove in said bolt.
Vith these and further objects in view, the present invention comprises details of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and fully described hereinafter with respect thereto, said drawings comprising Figure l, which is an elevational view of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2, which is an end view of the bolt, lock-nut, and keying means assembled; Fig.- 3, which 'is a longitudinal partially sectional view of the elements coinprising the invention in assembled relation; F ig. t, which is a collective view of the several elements of the invention in spaced relation with respect to one another andfsectioned along their longitudinal axis; and Fig. 5, which is a perspective view ofthe key member.
Referring to the drawings, an ordinary type ofbolt is shown as comprising a shank l, terminating at one end in a head 2, and at its opposite end provided with external screw-threads 3, which are crossed by a milled groove 4, running preferably along one side only of the bolt and parallel with the longitudinal axis thereof. v.
Adapted to be screwed upon the threaded portion of `this bolt is an ordinary nut 5, provided with a central'internally threaded aperture 6. The said nut when screwed upo n the bolt as far as desired is bound in position by a specially constructed lock-nut 7.
The said lock-nut is provided with a cen` tral longitudinally extending threaded aperture 8, the threads of said ap'- erture, however, being crossed by a plurality of relatively slightly spaced longitudinally extending grooves 9. These grooves preferably occur suliiciently close together to make it possible for one of them to be readily brought into a position registering with the groove 4: inthe bolt l.
After the rst nut and lock-nut have been assembled upon the said bolt in the desired position, a, small inexpensively made key 1s used t0 prevent; the accidental displacement of the lock-nut, which would thereby releasel the primary n ut of the bolt. This .key preferably comprises a quadri-laterally shaped section 10 of metal relatively soft when compared with the steel or iron used in .the bolt and nut construction, said section bein normally positioned s0 that one of its angu ar portions extends into the groove 4: of the bolt, while the oppositely positioned angular ortion extends into the groove 9 0f the ook-nut 7 in registry with the groove 4.
After'this condition has been effected, the oppositely extending wings 11 of the key are bent or forced downwardly into the threads of the bolt, thus, without mutilating the bolt-threads, preventing the key from displacement Within and the accidental 10- nternally moval from the registering grooves above described. ,l h'
The key is illustrated in detailY in Fig. 5.
The same embodies laterally extending Wires 5 l2 which are secured t0 the'vvings 1l and may be made to encircle the bolt and engage the threads thereof, after which the free ends of the Wires maybe ttvistedfto lprevent free accidental disen agement from the said threads, yand lprobab v4 even vmore positively preventing the accidental displacement foi the -key member.
m Having thus described my invention, what I claim `and desireto protect by Letters Patent of the United States isti-4 4 I A bolt having a vhead"and opposite Lend` threaded anda longitudinal groove in the threaded end, a'nutfhavmg a threaded @peni -a lock-nut having ing to receive the threaded end of the bolt,
y a threaded opening t0 receive the saidA threaded end and aving spacedV longitudinal grooves extending `through its threaded portion, a key for in? sertion Within the grooves of the 'bolt and nut-lock, Wings carried by the outer end of Vthe fk'e'y, and extending laterally beyond the signature. .u V g VH.
