i j anonrfraclin.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES JoriNsoN, a
citizenof the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the State'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of kwhich the following is a specification.
, closed relation; and, similarly, with means My invention relates in general to receptacles, and more particularly to sectional receptacles and has special reference to the provision of an improved ktype of receptacle includinga. veriable numberv of units.
The principal 'objects of my present invention are the provision of an improved structure of the type referred to characterized by a flexible, and preferably detachable, connection between the several receptacle units, whereby they may be readily moved relatively to each other, and thereby access may be had to the interior of any one of the several units without removal or disturbance of any other one of the units or of the contents thereof; the provision of an article of the class referred to characterized by the provision of means for locking the units in for sustaininfy them in redetermined o en e l l l o position; the provision of an improved form of unit structure by the employment of which the size of the receptacle may be expanded as desired; the provision in an article of the character referred to, of means for preventing tilting thereof; together with such further objects as may hereinafter appear.
While I have in the present case shown my improvements as applied to a box-like structure of the form convenient for the storage of garments and like articles, it is obviously susceptible by variation in the size of the units, of embodiment in a large variety of other structures, such as trunks, tool boxes, legal blank cabinets, etc.
In attaining the stated objects and such additional benefits and advantages as may be below disclosed, I have provided a structure shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figures 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a front, a rear, and a sectional elevational view illus trating a preferred form of device; Fig. 3 being taken on the line III- III of Fig. l.
Referring first to Fig. 1, it will be observed that I have here shown a plurality of units, 10, 10a and 10b, each including front and back portions, 11 and 12, two sides Specification of Letters Patent.

18-14, and 'a' bottom 15, forming a boxlike structure'normally open at the top as is perhaps most clearly to be seen on inspection of Fig; 3. When a plurality of units are assembled together as shown the bottom 15 of each of thefhigher units, such as is indicated at 10"l in Fig. 3, serves as a cover for theunit immediately below it, such as 10b, and for closing the top of the uppermost unit (such as 10) I employ a top member or cover 16, which is, of course, formed separately from unit 10.V
For a two-fold purpose, iflrst, in order that the connection between two cooperating units, such as are indicated at 10 and 10, may be rendered as nearly dust-tight nas possible, and, second, 'to facilitate the assembly of the units, the bottom of each member' 15 is disposed below the lower margins of the fronty and back 11, and 12, and the sides 1ill-14 thereof, thereby permitting it to closely contact with the upper part of the interior faces of the front and back and side members of the unit immediately below.
Io facilitate moving about of theV structure *formedv by the assembled members I preferably provide the lowermost of the several members, 10, 10a, and 10b, adjacent the corners thereof, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, with suitable casters 17, preferably boring the bottoms of each of the several members 15 for the reception of the shank 181 of the casters, whereby the set of casters may be conveniently detached from any one unit and applied to another unit in the event that it is desired to vary the relative arrangement of the several units.
For the purpose of connecting the several units together, I preferably employ a pair of hinges 18, one leaf 19 of each hinge beingarranged at the bottom of each of the units l0 andthe other leaf 20 being arranged at the top thereof, so that when the several units are arranged in position the hinge members 19 and 20 are properly co-related and may be detachably connected in some suitable manner, such as by the use of a draw-pin 21.
For lifting a unit in order that access may be had to the contents of the unit immediately therebelow, I preferably apply to each unit a handle 22; and for supporting the 3 which includes a pair of members 24, 25, pivoted to each other at 26 and to the, side 13 at 27, the member 2li being in turn piv.-V
oted to a bloclrZS which has a shanlr29 adapted to be removably inserted in a socket y vormedpin the bottom 15 of the next higher v unit, or of the cover 16.
For the purpose of fastening the several units in closed position, and of fastening the cover 16 in position upon the uppermost Aunit I preferably provide each unit adjacent its top and bottom with coperating locking members 30, 31, respectively, and likewise applyto the cover 16 members 30 as shown.
' VTo the end that the assembled structure 15 for lthe receptionroi a movable foot piecey 33 adapted to be slidably arranged therebetween, which foot piece may, when desired,
be withdrawn and extended to the rear of the device asindicated in F ig. 3.
From the foregoing description of myimproved receptacle, it will be apparent that not only may access to the contents of any one of the units be readily had without dis- Y turbance of any of the Vothers thereof, `but Copies of this patent may be obtained' Yfor i convenient device for present purposes bethat the structure is susceptible of any vdefing the folding strut device shown in Fig.
sired variation in 'the number or arrange- 'ment of the units; andfurthermore that by the employment orp units of the character described, the use of a specially.'constructedbottom unit or base member is'rnot necessitated.
illustrated its use, what l claimas" newand desire tosecure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of theV characterv described comprising in combination a plurality of flexibly connected receptacles, one Jorming a coverfor the other, each of the receptacles being adapted to receive an anti-tilting device, and an,antitiltingdevice on one of the receptacles.
2. A device ci' the` character described Y A v "4o Having thus described my invention and f comprisingV in combination aV plurality of flexibly connected receptacles, oneformmg a cover for the other, each of the receptacles being provided with a pair of oppositely disposed anglesto receive an anti-tilting device, and an anti-tilting device adapted to be slidably carried by said angles.
.In testimony whereof I have hereunto vsigned my namein the presenceof the two subscribed witnesses.
