Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. ,3, 1915.
Application filed September 16, 1914. Serial No. 862,063.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Jackson and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presses and more particularly to that type of devices known as barrel presses.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for compressing kraut and similar material in barrels and for holding the same under compression.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted to provide for different quantities of material within the barrel and which is arranged so that maximum or minimum pressure may be applied.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which when raised to inoperative position folds into compact form so as to permit of the ready removal of the material.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure l is an elevation of the device showing the press connected to a barrel and in inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the press in operative position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a follower which in this instance is substantially circular and has hingedly connected thereto a plunger rod 2 provided with notches 3 in one side edge thereof to receive the pressure pin 4 bridged across the side bars of the lever 5. The lever is provided at opposite ends with transverse bearing pins 6 and 7 the latter having hinged thereto a locking plate or arm 8 notched in one side edge as shown at 9 to engage a pin 10 projecting laterally from the side of the barrel adjacent the upper edge thereof, the barrel being indicated at 11. The first pin 6 is slidably and pivotally' mounted in a bearing member 12 secured to the side of the barrel and preferably constructed of a single strip of material bent .back upon itself to form an elongated loop 13 in which the pin 6 slides. The lower terminal of the loop is formed by bending in one side of the strip and riveting it to the opposite side as shown at 14: and then extending the terminal of that side outwardly and downwardly, as shown at 16, to form an engaging leg which lies inside of the barrel. Secured over the plunger 2 and lever 5 is a loop 17 which serves todraw the pin 4 into one of the notches 3 when the device is thrown to operative position and to maintain the pin in such position.
When the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to compress material contained within the barrel llthe lever has its free. end moved downwardly, the follower being turned at right angles to the plunger until engaged with the material.
This movement will cause the link to slide from its position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2 forcing the pin 4 into the desired notch. A continued downward movement of the free end of the lever will cause the pivoted end to slide upwardly until the pin 6 engages the upper end of the loop. Further downward movement will then cause compression of the material within the barrel. When the required degree of pressure has been obtained the locking arm is engaged with the pin 10 and the device locked in position. Upon throwing the device to inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 1 the link 17 will drop down upon the lever and plunger and hold the parts against movement, it being understood that the edges of the follower are in engagement with the side of the barrel and the lower edge resting upon the material.
What is claimed is A device for packing material in barrels comprising a bearing member secured to one side of the barrel and having an elongated loop, a lever having pivotal and slidable 7 upon the material within the barrel.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. CAMPBELL.
