Description

W.J. PALM.-` wAsTE PAPER PRESS. MPLICATIQNv FILED JUNE I6.` 1916.
Patented Ot. 9,
WILLIAM J. PALM, or MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. y
Minneapolis,.in the countyof Hennepinand State of. Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements Waste- Paper Presses; and I do hereby declare the Vfollowing "to be a full, clear, and exact'. def 'scription of the invention, suchaswill en- 410 able others skilled inthe vk.artto whichitlappertains to make and use the' same..
My invention has for its obj ect -to provide an extremely simple and highly eiiicijent press especially adapted for use in; pressing and baling waste paper, but adapted,`never theless, vfor several `analogous-uses. Asis e mg the pivoted wings free-for engagement well known, waste paper has considerableV Yso commercial value, and it hasbecome the practice in buildings, institutes, and even ink i private homes, to save and sell accumulated waste paper. Wheny placed in sacks, 1t v 1s bulky. For this purpose, large and ex'V pansible presses have usually been employed. My invention provides yan inexpensive press, which, whilef-itmaybemade in-any v desirable size, is, nevertheless, especially Vadapted to bemade" in comparatively small f sizes, such as will be found convenient' for;
daily use in public buildings, school houses, stores, flats, apartment houses, and the like, and even in privatedwellings. In the accompanying drawings which'` illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: l e Figure 1 is a side elevation of the press, some vparts being broken away and some parts being sectioned; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the press.; and,
Fig. 3 is a verticali section'taken on the line w3 w3 of Fig. l.
The press comprises a strong, rectangularbox 1, preferably made of `wood andl provided with a displaceable' side 2. The displaceable side 2, as shown, is connected to the bottom of the boxby hinges 3 and is adapted to be rigidly locked to the box in a closed' position by suitable lock devices shown as in the formof hooks 4 pivoted to .the ends of the box and engageable with eyes or lugs 5 on the end edges of the said displaceableside. The said displaceable side 2 is also preferably provided at its ends with laterally projecting brackets or metal WASTE-PAPE? PRESS# Y specification@ :teneis Patent. v 'Application mea June 16,1916. seriaiiv. ioaoiif Meneses@'191% prevent4 spreading thereof. f
Working loosely lwithin the box, lalndlrelnl'ovy able the refror n,isV .a presser plateor follower .1.7 `also preferably ,const ructedfof woodandh shown made upoflongitudinal boards 4 and are engageable;l -with' suitable bearingv surfaces on the sides of the box. The said-.dogs
A 8.may. be, and vpreferablyfare', ordinary metal 4hmges,eachhaving onewing rigidly attachedz to an end cleat y,of vthe presser plate and hav` with serratedorratchet-like" metal bars [or cleats, 9 rvrigidly"secured,l twofto the. fixed side, andgthe other two totheidispla'c'eable;
side ofthebox.y 'These'serratedbars positively Yprevent back-slipping of thelpresser j plate and. always hold the/said presser. plate down as far as it is pressed" until the piv'oted wing dogs are retracted orf .moved out ofengagement with the'ratchet 'bars' 9. The. v waste lpapers must, ofscourse, be placed in .the box while the presser plate 7 is removed therefrom. The presser plate thenbeing placed on top of the waste paper, a person vmay step thereon, and with his weight,com-
press the paper-at the bottom of the box, 'or if desired, a lever may be employed for this 'y purpose. At any rate, when the lock barsr 8 areturned outward, and the presser plate `is' forced downward, the said pawls will follow,y up their engagement with'the strips 9 and will hold the presser plate in the lowermost position in'which it'may be forced, so that the waste paper may be held under compres-l sion until it has set or lost most of its tendency toexpand. In fact, waste paperonce properly compressed, will expand but very little. When itis desired to remove the presser plate, thefhinged wings ofthe dogs 8 must be turned backward.
For binding the compressed ibales of of the box, the Votherends of thebinding wires are brought outward' through vertical slots `11 provided inone of. the sides fof the boX, and preferably formed in the displacef` able side 2. The manner ofbinding ofthese Wires may be varied, Vbutit wouldusually be accomplished as follows: Y ,Y l y Before the last pressure is applied to the .paper fin the -boX,.the V:presser plate 7 Awill f,
`be removed and those ends of the binding Wires Which have previouslybeenattaeliedi:
to the studs or screvv eyes 10 Will be loosened gfth'e'r'ef-rom; turned overthe topot thepap'er and brought outward ythrough the respective Slot-Vg ,11,1 Then* the presser 4plate Willr be Y againunserted inthe-ber7V and theY pressure I endsofftlie bindingfwireslylmay be` twisted the-bale is thus compressed, the'projecting togetherfthrough'-theslots 1l. This being done, ithe presser plateV should-be removed `andfthe' .displa-ceableY side 'QHOpened up, "therebyA permitting the Ycompressed Y and *bound bale ofI Wastel paper to befremo'ved 'from' the box.
