Description

; VUNITED sTATEs PATENT clarion.
JOHN G. FULTON, OF MIDDLEPORT, OHIO.
SALT-PACKING MACHINE.
`Speccation of Letters Patent No. 1`1,480dated August 8, 1854.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. FULTON, of
` Middleport, Meigs county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Packing Salt; and I do hereby declare the foli lowing to be a full, clear4` and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the ani neXed drawings, making part of this specification. i
` `The objectof my invention is to pack salt in barrelsby means of power instead of by means of handmallets as is now done.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l y is a front elevation. Fig. `2 is a vertical sec- `tion through one 0f the stampers and its lifting wheel.
(a) is the base board, to whichare affixed a pair of stanchions (b), supporting two cross beams (c, a2) affording guides for the shafts of the stampers i These stampers have a conical termination having radial grooves or corrugations (f). Each stamper shaft is furnished with a rack (g),` which meshes into cogs (7L), partially surrounding a nave (i). `These naves are all fixed to one shaft (m), which shaft is driven by power. The conical form of the Stamper head, has the effect of forcing the salt toward the sides `of the barrel andis especially useful at the bulge, and the radial grooves conine and compactthe salt more effectually than a simple cone would do. The tooth (j) which. comes rst into play is fixed with a spring so that in case it comes in contact with a tooth instead of a space it may yield rather than break a tooth.
Us) are elevations, which exactly ll the space within the chime and hold the barrel to its place. (Z) `is a clamp which also as- `sists in confining the` barrels. f
It is evident that whatever be the height of the salt within the barrels, the stampers are lifted the same height above the salt.
I claim herein as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent/ 1. The conical stampers having grooves for `the purpose described.
2. The yielding tooth in this connection to enable the commencement of the lifting action, without damage to the teeth.
. Intestimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
JNO. G FULTON- GEO. I-I.v KNIGHT,`
EDWARD H. KNIGHT.
