Description
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
E. MATHERS, OF MORGANTOVN, VIRGINIA.
CORN-SI-IELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,771, dated April 29, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER MATHERs, of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia, in the State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn- Shellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the cylinder A; Fig. 3, a perspective View of the shaft B; with letters of reference marked thereon, like letters referring to like parts.
A, Fig. 1, a cylinder of cast iron or other metal, constructed with a regular tapering bore, the smallest end of said bore at the bot-tom of said cylinder. Around the outside of the bottom of said cylinder is a projecting flange c, with suitable holes to receive bolts for the purpose of securing said cylinder to the bench E. Fig. 2 shows the inside of said cylinder with teeth arranged in rows running obliquely from'the bottom of the bore of said cylinder about half way up the same. B, Fig. 1, a shaft, also of cast iron or other metal, the upper end 2' of said shaft passing through the crosspiece J. 0, Fig. 1, a beveled cog wheel fastened to the top of the projecting part 2', of the shaft B. The shaft B, has the same taper as the bore of the cylinder A, Where it passes through the same. 9, a journal which fits into, and turns, in a bearing in the crosspiece f, Fig. 1. The shaft B is deeply grooved into channels, two of which channels are seen at 76, 70, Fig. 3. The channels 70 have a regular taper from the top to the bottom. D, D, Fig. 3, tongues of steel or other elastic material, fastened firmly at their upper end 11 in the channels 71:, 70, Fig. 3. The lower end of the tongues D D are left free and stand out from the channels 70 7c. The object of this arrangement of the tongues D D is to keep the ears of corn pressed out against the teeth 0 of the cylinder A, as they descend in the channels 7.: 70, but yielding sufliciently to allow the passage of the cob aft-er the corn is shelled off.
It will be seen that as many ears of corn can be shelled at the same time as there are channels in the shaft B. The operation of shelling is performed near the center of the shaft B, and requires but little power, which may be communicated to said shaft by any suitable gearing.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The construction of the shaft B with channels 7c is, said channels being furnished with elastic tongues D D, for the purpose above specified.
E. MATHERS. Witnesses:
