E S- 'Tgg EDSON S. TAYLOR, OF COLDWATER, MICHIGAN.
COASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed November 5, 1914. Serial No..870,324.
Coldwater. in the county of Branch and State of Michigan. have invented certaiir new and useful Improvements in Coasters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to coasters.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple. strong and convenient structure for the use of children. having a high degree of flexibility and adjustability.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction. arrangement and combination of the parts of a device of the character mentioned, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings. Figure 1. represents the invention in perspective. Fig. 2. in bottom plan view. the wheels being omitted. Fig. 3. a sectional plan indicated by broken line 3. 3 of Fig. 2. and Figs. 4 and modified forms of the wheel supports.
In the drawings. 1 is a base board composed of an elongated substantially narrow board having notches 2 and 3 cut into ends. A handle 1 is provided having a hand grip 5 across the upper portion. the lower end of said handle being beveled as at (i so that said handle can be slopingly mounted upon the base board 1 in a rearward direction. said handle being fastened to the base board 1 by means of suitable angle irons 7 and 8 whiclrare fastened to said handle by means of a bolt 9 and to said base board by means of the bolts 10. Spring-like wheel supports 11 and 12 are fastened to the under surface of said boa rd at each end adapted to straddle the notches 2 and 3. These wheel supports are of substantially U-shaped formation having flattened end portions 13 and suitable a1, ertures therethrough adapted to mount the axle ll of the wheel. These U- shaped wheel supports are fastened to the under surface of the base board 1 by means of suitable hooked bolts 15. the end portions of which are adapted to hook around the wheel supports and to draw said wheel supports in to tight engagementwith the under surface of the base board 1. The hooked bolts 15 pass through suitable apertures 16 running through the base board 1 and said hooked bolts 15 are suitably drawn tight by means of nuts 17 which are threaded upon the ends 18 of the bolts 15 and adapted to engage the upper surface of the base board 1. A suitable wheel 19 is mounted upon each of the shafts 11, said wheels being of any suitable form butpreferably of bicycle type having a cushion tire 2O thereto.
In the modification-shown in Fig. 1. the wheel su )port 23 is of the before described U-shapecl formation but has a spring loop 21- therein adapted to allow of resilient or spring-like movement to act as a cushioning effect.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the wheel support 11 has its neck portion caught by a bolt 15 of the structure previously described but the'end bolts 26 are constructed of an eyelet portion 27 through which the wheel support )asses and a threaded single portion :28 a apted to pass through an aperture 16 in the base board 1. A suitable plate 29 is seated within the under surface of the base board 1 as clearly shown in Fig. (3 having a central aperture 30 therethrough through which the bolts 26 pass and is adapted to meet the engage ment of a nut- 31threaded upon the shaft 28 of said bolt. said nut allowing a suitable adjustment upward or downward of said bolt so as to raise or lower the outer end 13 of said wheel support.
In operation. a child rests one foot upon the base board 1. rabs the member of the handle and with the other foot gives an energetic shove forward. \Vhen he desires to guide the device forward in a right or left direction. the end portion is slightly lifted and turned to one side or the other as he lowers the foot to theground to push the same forward.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A coaster comprising a base board having notches at each end. U-shaped wheel sup )orts fastened to the under surface of said-coaster and adapted to straddle said notches, wheels mounted in said supports, and a handle slopingly positioned upon the forward end of the upper surface of said base board.
A coaster comprising a base board having notches at each end and suitable apertures therethrough, spring like U-shaped wheel supports straddling each i of said notches, means mounted through said apertures and fastening said wheel support to the under surface of said base board, parallel sloping angle irons mounted to the upper surface of the forward end of said base board in spaced relationship, a handle mounted between said angle irons, and a transversely mounted hand grasp in the upper portion of said handle.
3. A. coaster comprising a base board having notches at the ends, U-shaped Wheel supports straddling the notches and having eyes at their outer ends, means for securing said U-shaped members to the under surface of the base board, shafts in the eyes of the wheel supports, and wheels mounted on said shafts and operating in said notches.
4. A coaster comprising a base board having notches at the ends, a rearwardly sloping handle secured upon the base board, U- shaped spring wheel supports secured to the under surface of the base board and straddling the notches, and wheels mounted in said supports and operating in said notches.
5. A coaster comprising a base board, wheel supports mounted in said base board, means securing said wheel supports to said base board consisting of bolts having threaded ends and the opposite ends hooked, said hooked ends adapted to encircle said wheel supports and to lock in the under surface of said coaster, said threaded end portions passing through said base board, locking heads upon the threaded ends of said bolts, and a handle to the forward end of said base board.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
