residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold-Recording Devices, of

My invention relates to devices for recording and copying purposes, such as a manifold sales book adapted for the record 'and multiple copy of correspondence or sales.
The essential objectsof my invention are to automatically clamp and support the record sheets duringthe recordingioperation, and to automatically release the same when the recordingfhas ceased; to utilize the retaining means for. carbon papers as the guiding or] separating means for the -.multiple paper strips; to accommodate depended claims.

For recording material there is employed in this instance a rectangular shaped package M of record paper in triplicate sheets, m, m, m arranged in fan folds m The package rests on the base A and is prevented from excessive endwise movement by the portion 0 of the guard frame at one end, and by the portion (2' of the spring arm at the other end. The sheets m, m, and m pass from the package respectively over the clamping arms j, h, and the sleeve f, and thence horizontally for ward over the plate F and under the bar e the carbon strips resting upon the upper faces of the record strips m and m In operation, record papers m, m, and m are together manually drawn forward the required distance by grasping their projecting forward ends. In order to insure that no excess of paper escape from the folds m of the package during this operation, it is found advantageous at times to manually press the free end of the frame C downwardly and maintain the bar 0 in tight frictional contact with the upper face of the top fold. The pivotal character of this frame accommodates it to a package of any height. The operator applies his pencil to that portion of the face of the strip m which is upon the plate F, with his hand resting upon the bar e. The weight of the hand serves to depress the frame E, and subject the plate F to the pressure of the spring arm (1 and by virtue of this action the record strips are held tightly clamped between the plates F, e, and e a ainst accidental movement, and a firm backing afforded during the recording operation. When the pressure of the hand is removed the spring arm returns the parts to normal position. a
Successive len hs of records are detached by upwardly bending the advanced portions of the record strips against the forward edge of the bar 6 and then transversely and rearwardly pulling them thereagainst to tear them. The served triplicate, which the operator preserves, is placed on the base A beneath the package M, access being afforded by raising the package with the members C and E in some such positions as shown by broken lines in Fig. 5. Derangement of the package M during this elevating operation is prevented by the guard frame C which surrounds it. Meanwhile the slips already on the base A are prevented from escape by the walls-a and lips a which, with the base,
form a receptacle.
What I claim is 1. A manifold recording device comprising a base, an open guard frame pivotally attached thereto, to retain the package of paper strips, a second frame pivotally attached to the base and located above the first-named frame, carbon sheet clamping means upon the second frame, and means for automatically-clamping and supporting the, record sheets during the recording operation.
2. A' manifold recording device comprising a base, an open guard frame pivotally attached thereto to retain the package of paper strips, a second frame pivotally attached'to the .base and located above the firstnamed frame, carbon sheet clamping means upon the second frame, a pivotally mounted.
paper-supporting member disposed between means on the second frame for guiding strips of paper from said package, a pivotally mounted pa er-supporting member disposed between sai frames, and carbon sheet holding means carried by the upper frame above said pivoted member.
4. A manifold recording device comprising a base adapted to support a package of paper strips, an open frame pivotally connected with, said base to surround said package, a second frame above the firstnamed frame and pivotally mounted on the base, means on the second frame for guiding strips of paper from said package, a pivotally mounted paper-supporting member disposed between said frames, carbon sheet holding means carried by the upper frame above said pivoted member, and a resilient member fixed to the base and upon which the pivoted memberrests during the recording operation.

In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a base, a guard frame resting upon the base and pivotally connected thereto at one end, a second. open frame above the first frame pivotally connected at one end with the base, a resilient member upon the base within the first frame, a record plate pivotally attached to the second frame and supported by the resilient member, and
an inturned flange upon the end of the first frame.

"combination of a base, a frame above the base pivotally connected with the base at one end, a record plate pivotally connected at one end to the frame, a. resilient member upon the base supporting the plate, cross bars in the frame in different horizontal prlanes, clamps upon the cross bars and a ame pivotally mounted on the base parallel therewith for holding a package of paper strips.
7. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a base, an open frame pivotally attached to the base and above the base, an upwardly extending member upon the base, a plate pivotally attached to the frame resting upon said member and a second frame pivotally mounted on the base beneath the first-named frame for holding a package of paper strips beneath said upwardly extending member.
8. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a base, an open guard frame pivotally attached at one end of the base and resting thereon, an inturned flange upon the the end of the guard frame, a second frame above the first frame pivotally attached at one end to the base and comprising lateral arms, a cross bar upon the forward end of said second frame, and across bar upon the rear end of said second frame, a plate yieldingly mounted in the arms below the rear bar and a supporting member upon the base in contact with the plate.
9. In a device of. the type set' forth, the combination of a base, lateral upturned flanges upon the base with upwardly directed lugs at one end thereof, a strip fixed to the base and extending beyond the same adapted to form a cover, a frame above the base, a member carried by the under side of said frame, pivot members connecting the frame to support the paper with the lugs and an upwardly extending member supporting said member carried by the frame and fixed to the base.
