Application filed February 10, 1914. Serial No. 817,747. 7
To all whom it'mag concern:
Be it known'that we, ERVIN B. PETERMAN and CHARLIE H. Rnsnn, each a citizen of the United States, and residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick, State of Kansas, have jointly invented a new and useful device and improvement, that the title of which is a Radiator-Hose Clamp and Protector.
The present invention relates to hose clamps, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character particularly adapted for use on radiator hose connections of automobiles.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a hose clamp of unique construction,
whereby it may efiectively embrace the hose to clamp and protect the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that a changes in the precise embodiment of the sleeve or band 1, bent from a relatively wide plate or blank, and divided longitudinally. One end portion, designated 2, of the band or outer plate 1 is curled back outwardly and wrapped around a bar or strip 3, and
the other end portion 40f the band or plate 1 is bent outwardly'and wrapped around a bar or strip 5.
The present clamp includes an inner sleeve or band 6 disposed snugly within the band 1, and formed from a relatively wide plate. The inner band 6 is somewhat longer than the outer band 1, and has its outer end 9 wrapped or bent around the end portion 4 of the band 1 and bar or strip 5. The inner band 6 is then continued from the end portion 9, within the outer band to a point short of and adjacent the end portion 2 of the outer band, and the inner band is thence extended, as at 7, within the outer band across the opening or slot between the ends of the outer band to the opposite side of the two bands. .The portion 7 of the inner band is carried across between the opposite sides of the outei band 1, as "a chord, and the inner.
band is then reflexed or bent back as at 8. The portion 8 of the extended portion 7 which is bent back ,uponitself, extends across the opening or slot between the ends 7 Specification of Letters Iatent. I Patented July 20, 1915.
2 and 4 of the outer band, between the sides" of the band, as a chord. The portions'7 and 8 thus provide ajtwo-ply chordal member between the sides of the outer band 1 and extending across the opening between the ends of the outer band. Thus, the end portions 4 and 9 of the outer and inner bands or plates are applied or attached to the bar or strip 5, and the end portion 2 of the outer band or plate 1s applied or attached to the bar or strip 3, while the end portion. 7-8 of the inner band or plate 6 extends across the opening or slot between the aforesaid end portions to close the said opening, and to provide means for engaging that portion of the:1 lgose lying between the bars or strips 3 an Draft 'or clamping bolts 10 of any suitable character are engaged through the barsor strips 3 and 5 and the end portions of the plates wrapped therearound, whereby when the bolts 10 are tightened, the outer sleeve or band 1 will becontracted, to contract the inner band or sleeve 6 also. When the inner band or sleeve 6 is contracted, the end portion 78 thereof will be moved within the outer sleeve or band 1, as will be apparent.
The present clamp may be readily applied over a hose, or the like, by either slipping the clamp longitudinally over the hose, or
by opening-the clamp which is accomplished by removing the bolts 10 and spreading the bars or strips 3 and 5. Then, when the clamp is tightened about the hose, by tightening the bolts-10, the bars or strips 3 and 5 will be drawn toward each other and they, together with the end portions 2, 4 and 9 of the plates, will rest snugly upon the portion 7 of the inner band or plate 6. In this manner, the portion 7 will protect the hose from injury when the bars 3 and 5 are drawn together, and furthermore, the portion 7 will close the opening between the said bars. The portions 7 and 8 provide a two ply closure for the opening between the bars 3 and 5,
and will be comparatively rigid, although the bands or plates are, as a whole, resilient or contractile.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
-1. A hose clamp embodying outer and being spaced, one end of the inner band I being ap lied to the corres onding end of the outer and and the inner and then being continued within the outer band to a point short of and ad'acent the other end of the outer band the inner band thence being extended within the outer band across the openingbetween the ends of the outer band to the opposite side of the bands. I
2. A hose clamp embodying outer and inner bands, a pair of spaced bars to which the ends of the outer band are attached, one end of the inner band being attached to one of the said bars, andthe inner band thence being continued within the outer band to a point short of and adjacent the other end of the outer band, the inner band thence being extended within the outer band across the opening between the ends of the outer band to the opposite side of the bands, and draft means connecting the said bars.
7 3. A hose clamp embodying outer and inner bands, the ends of the outer band being spaced, one end of the inner band being applied to the correspondin end of the outer Within the outer band across the opening between the ends ofthe outer band to the opposite side of the bands, and the extended G.
