G. L. M KEE BAND CLAMP June 20, 1939.
Filed Feb. 13, 1957 INVENTOR. Glen/7 L. MQ/(ee BY ATTORNEY.
Patented June 20, 1939 UNITED STATS raise McKee Brothers Corporation,
Bakersfield,
Caliii, a corporation of California Application February 13, 1937, Serial No. 125,650
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in band clamps, and more particularly to a band consisting of a thin, flat, flexible strip and a clamping means for securing firmly the ends of the band after the latter has been tightened around an article, container or group of articles, of any peripheral shape.
An important object of the invention is to provide novel clamping means formaintaining the ends of such a band when it has a plurality of c-onvolutions, one wrapped upon another, which clamp is of such a nature as to present a smooth surface to the exterior of the article, container or group of articles, and at the same time present a smooth surface at the exterior of the clamping means, whereby no projecting parts may interfere with the full use of the banded article, container or group of articles. This application is a continuation-in-part of my co-pending application for patent, Serial No. 79,545, filed May 13, 1936.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description.
In the drawing, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, illustrating an embodiment of my invention as applied to a hose and its contained nipple.
Figures 2 and 3 are enlarged sections taken respectively on the lines 22 and 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation ofmy band and clamping means, indicating the method of application.
Figure 5 is a section similar to Figure 2, but with the hose and nipple removed, and showing only one convolution of the Wrapping band.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference number I2 designates a hose in which a nipple I3 is applied. The present band I4 is wrapped tightly around the hose, compressing the hose upon the nipple to insure a fluid tight connection therebetween. If desired, the nipple may have a circumferential groove I50 in which the hose is compressed.
In Figures ,2 to 4, the band I4 is shown as a continuous band having a plurality of convolutions wound one upon another, whereas in Figure 5 only one convolution is shown.- The present device is sold assembled and ready for use as shown in full lines in Figure 4.
The clamping means comprises a clip or sleeve I5 that is longitudinally slotted to receive and surround the ends of the band it. The clip carries a tongue I6 that may be bent down upon an end of the band, as more fully described hereinafter. However, the tongue I6 may first be employed for holding the clamping means in the tool shown and described in my said co-pending application, during the application of the band to the article, container, or group of articles to which it is applied.
The inner end 55 of the band I t is bent under or over inner portion I'i of the clip I5.
In the drawing, the end I8 is shown as bent under the clip, but it is believed clear without further illustration that said end may be bent over the clip and the end It passed through the clip and lying between the convolutions of the band (when a plurality is used).
Outer end IQ of the band, after being severed at 28 from a continuous strip 2i, is bent over on top of the clip, as indicated in broken lines in Figure 4 and as indicated in full lines best in Figures 2, 3 and 5. The tongue I6 is thereupon bent over on top of the bent end I9, to retain the end it in position. The tip of the tongue is usually bent, as suggested at 22, to extend around the bend in the end I9, to further lock said end in place.
The manner of drawing the band Hi tight around an article, container or group of articles is believed fully and clearly described in my said co-pending application for patent. Suffice to say here that the band is so tightened and that tin ends are locked in the manner described hereinabove. Drawing the band 2| relative to the clip I5 causes the inner end E8 of the band to exert pressure on the inner portion II of the clip.
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications which may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A band clip comprising a body member having flange members extending toward each other, defining a longitudinal passage between the body and the flange members, and a tongue extending from one end of and overlying the body member on the side away from the longitudinal passage and extending in a direction substantially parallel with said longitudinal passage.
2. A band clip comprising a body member having flange members extending toward each other, defining a longitudinal passage between the body and the flange members, and a tongue extending from one end of and overlying the body member on the side away from the longitudinal passage, the tip of the tongue extending around the end of the body member.
