Description
A. BARROWS.
Improvement in Pipe Attachments in Plumbing.
Fig. 1
Patented May 9,1871.
timid fittin time em Letters Patent No. 114,635, dated May 9, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN PlPE ATTACHMENTS'IN PLUMBING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the semi.
scription thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing makingpart of this specification- Figure 1 being a side view of my im'proved coupling" as applied to a cast-iron bath-tub;
Figure 2, a central vertical section of the same;
Figure 3, a bottom view thereof, the pipe and coupling-ring or collar being removed.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
By the method of coupling pipe to plumbers ware now in use the coupling-bolts are passed from the ina side of the vessel through a washer-piece which surrounds the hole and fits in a depression, and thence out through the wall of the vessel, so that the heads of the bolts appear inside, and there are joints and seams to collect dirt; and, if the vessel is enameled, the enamel is liable to crack of, making the surface rough, unsightly, and subject to rust, and to hold impurities, as well as causing the vessel to leak.
My invention consists in casting or forming, upon the outside of a cavity or hollow projection on the outside of the bath-tub or other vessel of plumbers ware, notched lugs to hold the heads of the couplingbolts outside of the vessel, so as to avoid the perforation of the vessel for the purpose, and all irregularities and imperfections of the surface thereof inside.
This improvement is shown in the drawing, wherein- A represents the wall of a bath-tub. B, the hollow projection to which the waste-pipe G r is coupled by means of a coupling-ring or collar, D.
Upon the outside of the hollow projection 13 are cast lugs a a, close up to the bottom of the tub, allowing room above them to admit the heads of the coupling-bolts G G, and where these lugs come thus closely opposite to the surface of the vessel they are notched to receive the body of the bolts, as shown.
The bolts extend down through ears or lugs b l) on the coupling-collar D, and are tightened by nuts, as usual.
The inside of the bath-tub thus constructed is plane and smooth around the waste aperture 0, so that, if the tub is enameled on the inside, as .shown, the enamel is not liable to crack, off around the aperture;
'nor is there any seam, irregularity, or depression to collect impurities, nor any possibility of leaking.
The strainer d may be either in the aperture 0 or in the outlet f, below the overflow-passage g of the tub, as shown in the drawing.
This improvement is equally applicable toenarncled, tinned, galvanized, and plain bath-tubs, sinks,washstand tops, wash-basins, bedet-pans, urinals, waterclosets, and similar plumbers ware; and, though simpie, is very useful and convenient.
Instead of the notches in the lugs a a perforations may be employed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
The hollow projection B on the outside of a bathtub or otherarticle oi plumbers ware, when provided with the notched lugs 11 a to receive the couplingbolts G G for connecting pipes thereto, substantially as herein specified.
ABAD BARROWS.
