DRAIN ONNEQTI N- This invention relates to improvements in drain connections.
The present invention contemplates the provision of improved means forconnect- ,ing the drain opening of a shower stall or the like to the-drain pipe or trap disposed therebelow.
One of the objects of the'present invention is to provide improved means of the character referred to wherein the strainer plate may be readily placed and secured in position over the outlet or waste opening in'the bottom of the shower stall without the necessity of rotating the plate, as heretofore, the improved means providing for proper fitting together or alignment of the parts in the event that the waste opening in the bottom of the stall is not lined up exactly with the drain pipe ortrap below. 7
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one embodiment thereof is shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view, line 11 in Fig. 2. and
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
In the drawings, 10 represents the floor or bottom of a shower stall, lavatory or the like provided with the usual outlet opening 11, a drain pipe 12 internally threaded at its upper end, as shown, being disposed below floor 10 with its threaded end co-axial with the floor opening, the edge 13 of the floor opening overhanging this end of the drain.
An externally threaded collar lt is threaded into the end of drain 12 flush therewith, and is provided with the pair of inwardly directed diametrically opposite lugs 15.
A strainer plate 16 provided with dis charge openings 17 is disposed above floor 10 and fitted over the floor opening with its edge 18 overlapping and engaging the edge 13 of said opening. The plate 16 is further provided with the depending annular flange 19 coaxial with and spaced from the edge 13 of opening 11 and extending downwardly into drain pipe 12 and terminating short of lugs 15. The strainer plate is held in position by bolts 20 extending downwardly therethrough and threaded into lugs 15, whereby the edge 18 of the plate is held in taken on the 'two bolts 19 and without the necessity of turning or rotating the plate whereby ,the
edge :18 thereof'w'ould scrape over the underlying e'dge13of the fioor opening and thus remove at this point any protective coating of paint-with which the floor might be provided, the bolts 20 acting to securely clamp plate 16 iii-position and to provide a tight joint between the edge 18 thereof and the edge'13 of opening 11. In the event that the bottom or floor 10 is not set up.
exactly in alignment with drain 12, there is sufficient play of bolts 20 in the openings 21 in plate 16 to permit sutlicienttilt-ing of the bolts without disturbing the snug fit between plate 16 and the floor 10.
Furthermore, in the event of slight leakage or seepage of water between the floor edge 13 and plate edge 18, the water will be directed into the space between edge 13 and flange 19 and will thence flow into the drain 12 with the water flowing into the latter by way of outlet openings 17 The flange 19 acts as a guard to direct the water issuing from openings 1'7 into the drain and to prevent any of the water from finding its way upwardly to the edge 13 of opening 11 and causing possible corrosion at this point as well as at the threads by which collar 14 is held in position in the end of the drain.
When it is desired to remove plate 16 to provide floor 10 with a new protective coat of paint, or for other reasons, it is merely necessary to remove bolts 19, after which plate 16 may be readily lifted out of position. In the improved construction there is no threaded connection, as in constructions used heretofore, between the part overlapping and fitting tightly upon the floor at the outlet opening thereof, which part in the present construction is the strainer plate 16, the latter performing the double function of providing the outlet or drain openings 17 I been shown and described, but of course various changes may be made such as in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
The invention claimed is:
-1. In combination with a floor provided with an opening, and a drain internally threaded at one end and disposed below said floor with said end coaxial with the floor opening, the edge of the floor opening overhanging said end of the drain, of an eXternally-threaded collar threaded into said end and provided with inwardly directed lugs, a strainer plate disposed above said floor and fitted 'over the floor opening with its edge overlapping and engaging the edge of said opening, and bolts extending d0wnwardly throughsaid plate and threaded into said lugs to hold said plate in' position with its edge in tight engagement with the underlying edge of the floor" opening.
:2. In combination with a floor provided with an opening, and adrain internally threaded at one end and disposed below said floor with said end coaxial with the floor opening, the edge of the floor opening overhanging said end of the drain, of an externally-threaded collar threaded into said end substantially flush therewith and provided with inwardly directed lugs, a strainer plate disposed above said floor and fitted over the floor opening with its edge overlapping and engaging the edge of said opening, said plate being provided with a depending annular flange coaxial with and spaced from the edge of said opening and extending into said drain and terminating short of said lugs, and bolts extending 'downwardlv through said plate and threaded into said lugs to hold said plate in position with its edge in tight engagement with the underlying edge of the floor opening.
In witness whereof, I hereto aflix my sig nature.
EDWARD F. NIEDECKEN.
