Application filed May 5, 1914. Serial No. 836,474.
T all "whom it may concern llc known that l, A uKANDlCR Lnn HAR- RISON, acitizen ot' the United States, residing at llnion City, in the county of Obion and Suite of "lenncssee, have invented certain new and useful myovemcnts in Presser- Fect for Fiewing-lllachiues; and I do hereby declare the following; to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as "ill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lily invention relates to improvements in sewing machines, and particularly to that part of sewing machines known as presser feet. The present improvements beingespecially adaptable for use in connection with machines employed in the sewing" of mm terial which has been previously treated with a water proofing or like substance.
lt has been found that after fabric has been treated with a water proofing com pound or other adhesive substance, that the same is sewed and made into ditlerent forms with extreme ditliculty, owing to the fact that the needle or needles of the machine after passing through the goons a comparatively few number of times, becomes gummed with the water proofing or like substance thereby destroying the f ed and tension of the machine and also'greatly reducing the speed thereof. In fact it has been found to be almost impossible to work with goods of the character described, in a satisfactory manner without in some way overcoming P the objections above noted.
It is, therefore, the object of this invention to construct a presser foot provided with means whereby the disarrangement of the feed and tension of the machine is avoided, and at the same time a high rate of speed maintained throughout the sewing operation.
With this and other objects in View which will become apparent from the following description, this invention consists of a prcsser foot provided at its forward end with mains-whereby oil. or other lubricant is fed continuously and automatically to the needle or needles of the machine, thereby preventing any gumming thereof; any disarrangcmcnt of the feed or tension of the machine, or any reduction in speed of the same.
For the purpose of explaining" coy-invention have illustrated in the accompanying drawings, a satisfactory reduction of the closed in the accompanying drawings, 5-
designates the shank of the presser foot, which 1S adapted to be connected in, any suitable manner to a presser bar of the usual type. The shank 5 is shown provided integrally with 21v fulcrum block 6, said fulcrum block (3 extending between lugs 7 positioned on the foot plate 8, the same being held in pivotal engagement therewith by means of a. transverse pivot pin 9. The foot plate 8 may be of any desired form, and is shown in the drawings provided with the usual needle apertures or slots 10 and the upturning outer portion 11 adapted to en-. gage and gradually guide the goods smoothly under the needle or needles of the machine.
Mounted preferably in the vertical plane upon the outer portion 11 of the foot plate 8, is-a socket member 12, preferably of conical form, and open at its end portions, said socket member 12 being adapted to receive and frictionally retain. therein an absorbent medium, 13, such as felt, cotton or the like. As will be seen from Fig. 1 the socket member 12 is slightly beveled at its lower end 14: in order to conform substantially'to the contour of the outer upturned portion 11 oi. the foot plate 8.
in actual practice the absorbent medium, 13, is saturated with oil or other lubricating substance and is then placed in the socket member 12, substantially filling the same, It will thus be seen that as the goods, previously treated with a water proofing substance or the like, pass under the foot plate 8, they will receive automatically, through the forces of gravity and capillary "attraction a constant supply of the lubricant from the socket member 12. The goods thus diled will, upon coming into contact with the needle or needles of the machine, lubricate the same, thus preventing an accumulation thereon of the adhesive, Water proofing substance. l't been tound that through the use of this device as above described, an
machine. It will be noted from the foregoing that the material saturated with the lubricant and adapted to bear against the fabric as the same is fed into the machine,
could be mounted on the foot plate in many different ways, for instance the saturated lnateri'al could be used alone instead of being used in connection with the socket memher, but the construction as shown and described is preferable. It is also obvious that this invention is not limited to the precise construction shown in the drawings, as various modifications and alterations may be made therein, by; one skilled in the art,
.within the scope of the appended claims. It
is also evident that the device as described is not only adapted for use with a presser foot of the type shown, but that it may be used in connection with any presser foot now in use.
- I claim 1. In combination with a p'resser foot of a sewing. machine, of a conical socket member mounted on said presser foot and adapted to support and retain an absorbent medium, said socket member being opened at its lower end to permit of a contact between the absorbent medium and the fabric as the same is fed under said presser foot.
2. A presser foot of the class described comprising means for supporting and retaining an absorbent medium, the lower end of said means conforming substantially to the contour of the under face of the upturned portion of said presserfoot.
3. In a presser foot for sewing machines of the fiat foot type, having a hinged foot plate, an absorbent medium adapted to be impregnated with a lubricant, a tube-like member disposed upon the forward end of said plate to retain said absorbent material, I
over inequalities of thicknesses of the fabrics, a tapered tube-like member mounted upon the forward end of said foot plate, absorbent material adapted tobe impregnated with a lubricant and disposed within said tube-like member, said foot plate having an upward curve at its forward end, and means for placing the lubricant upon the fabric or fabrics as it passes beneath the forward end of said hinged. foot plate.
5. In an attachment of the class described, a presser foot having an upturned portion, a. conical socket adapted to support an absorbent medium mounted thereon, the lower end of said-socket member extending below the surface of the upturned portion of said presser foot and conforming substantially to the contour of said upturned portion.
In testimony whereof, I ah'ix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
