PRESSER-FOOT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 282,113, dated July 31, '1883. Application filed December 1, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosErH H. PARKHILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and Stateof Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presser-Feet for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in presser-feet that may be used on sewing-ma chines generally, the object of which is to provide a rolling attachment to run in advance of the needle, so as to press the goods being sewed downward upon the feed without stretching one ply more than another in the process of sewing, by substituting a rolling pressure, instead of a sliding one, forward of the needle, thereby keeping the edges of the goods even and preventing any wrinkling of the same, and at the same time having a heel to said foot arranged to press the goods to the feed in rear of the needle also.

My invention consists in forming a presserfoot for a sewing-machine with a downwardprojecting heel arranged to press the goods being sewed upon the feed in rear of the needle, and providing it also with a roller to give pressure forward of said needle, as shown in the accompanying drawings, which drawings constitute part of this specification, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the presser-foot as having a needle passing down through it and a section of a feeding device under it. Fig. 2 is a plan view, looking from above; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the roller detached.

Similar reference-letters indicate like parts throughout, of which- A is the main body of the presser-foot; B, the heel; O, the roller; D, the needle of the machine; e, the pivot-flanges, between and into which the roller 0 is journaled.

F is a section of the feed device toa sewingmachine, and t is a slot through which the needle of a sewing-machine plays or a hole provided for the purpose may be used instead thereof.

It will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 that the roller 0 is located forward of the needle, and therefore its action serves to press the goods downward upon the feed at that place, and by means of its rolling pressure causes all of the different plies being sewed to feed alike, thereby obviating the rubbing pressure at that point usual to other devices used for the purpose, and consequently the uneven stretching of the different plies of goods being sewed incident to the old process.

It will be further observed that the heel B presses the goods to the feed also but its action is in rear of the needle at a point where the goods are sewed, thereby constituting a double pressure, or pressure at two points on the feedto wit, a rolling pressure forward of the needle, where the edges of cloth are liable to give or slip by using a rubbing pressure, and a rubbing pressure in rear of the needle, where the action is on the sewed part of the goods, thereby making the feed effectual without the liability of puckering or wrinkling the seams. The roller 0, Fig. 3, is placed between the pivot-fianges e, as shown at Figs. 1 and 2, with its lower tangent being on a plane with the bottom of the heel B, and works 011 a journal placed through its aperture and through holes in said flanges, and secured in place by means of heads or taps onits ends.

Said improved presser-foot may be attached to sewing-machines now in use by any of the known ways of the art.
