Description

May 25, 1.948. F. J. UCCELLINE 2,442,222
PRESSER FOOT Filed Feb. 18, 1947 IN VEN TOR.
Frederic/(J \1 UcceZZru' w MM A TTORNEXI' Patented May 25, 1948 UNITED. STATESvv PATENT OFFICE PRESSER Foo'r Frederick J. Uccellini, Norwalk, Conn. Application February 18, 1947, Serial'No. 729,262
The present invention relates to a presser foot for use on sewing machines and particularly to liquid or lubricant applying means thereon.
Under some circumstances it-is desired to apply a liquid or lubricant to the surface of the material before it passes under the presser foot. For example, when rubber or tacky material is being stitched a lubricant may be applied to the surface of the material to aid the material, as it advances, to slide under the presser foot as it is being fed.
Heretofore, the means for applying the liquid have been either ineiiicient or so cumbersome that they would interfere with the operator or the material during the sewing operation.
The present invention overcomes these difficulties by providing a presser foot having a liquid or lubricant applying means which operates efficiently over long periods of time and which has no projecting parts to interfere with the sewing operation.
This is accomplished by building a suitable applicator and supply passages therefor into the presser foot and connecting the supply passages in the presser foot to a reservoir for the material to be applied. It is presently preferred to use a hollow presser bar as the reservoir and to connect the bottom of the bar to the supply passage in the presser foot so that none of the component parts of the supply means lie outside of these elements to interfere with the manipulation of the fabric or material or the sewing operation.
Other features and advantages will be apparent from the specification and claims when considered in connection with the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the presser foot of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section, showing the passages and reservoir.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings the presser bar I is slidably mounted in the head [I in the usual manner and a presser foot [2 having a presser bar receiving sleeve [2a is secured to the bottom thereof by a set screw l3 or any other suitable means. The presser foot is normally urged by the presser bar into engagement with the top of the material to be stitched (not shown) and maintains it in position to be engaged by the usual feed dog 14 of the sewing machine and advanced and held thereby as it is stitched by the needle [5 carried by the needle bar It reciprocating in the head II and passing through the aperture I! in the presser foot.
3 Claims. (CL'112 -43).
' The present invention provides means on the presser foot for applying a coating to the material being sewn as it passesunder the presser foot. The nature 'of the coating may vary in accordance with the requirements of the particular operation. For example,- if the material being sewn is artificial leather or a plastic material which is sticky, a lubricant for the material is applied to the surface to permit it to slide readily under the presser foot.
This is accomplished by providing the usual upturned tip 12b of the presser foot with a downwardly facing recess or socket 18 in whichv is mounted an applicator I9 in the form of a wick or brush which projects into wiping engagement with the upper surface of the material being sewn. As shown in Fig. 3 the applicator is preferably disposed on the line of sewing, i. e., the line passing through the needle aperture in the presser foot and the center of the presser bar along which the feed dog moves the material, and is of such a width as to effectively spread a suflloient amount of lubricant on the surface passing under the presser foot. The lubricant which may be oil, grease or water, depending upon the material being sewn,
is fed from a. reservoir to the recess containing the applicator through passages or ducts 20 formed in the body of the presser foot and extending from the recess to the bore in sleeve 12a. The lubricant is transferred from the recess through the applicator to the surface by capillary action or by gravity. I
In the illustrated form of the invention the presser bar is made in the form of a hollow tubular member and forms the reservoir 2| for the lubricant. The end of the tubular bar fits within the sleeve l2a of the presser foot and communicates with the ducts '20 therein so that lubricant stored in the reservoir will feed through the ducts under the pressure of the head of lubricant in the reservoir. The reservoir may be conveniently replenished through the top of the presser bar which is closed by a threaded plug.
The foregoing structure it will be seen provides for the storing of an adequate supply of lubricant and for distributing it evenly over the surface of the material being sewn as required without any projecting means which will interfere with the manipulation .of the material being sewn or with the operator during the sewing operation.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention and portions of the im rovements may be used without others.
