Letters Patent No. 114,582, dated May 9, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may-concern Be it known that I, Hermit MATIER, of Belfast, Ireland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l is an end view of my improved paper box closed, part being broken away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same extended, and with the covers raised.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved paper box designed especially for holding handkerchiefs put up by the dozen, but which may be used with equal facility for holding other articles; and
It consists in the paper box constructed in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
A and B are the bodies of two boxes, which are provided with covers 0 D.
The covers 0 D may be hinged to the bodies A B by paper and cloth hinges a b, in the ordinary mannet.
The bodies AB are hinged at the side edges of their bottoms diagonally opposite the hinges 'a. b
and 2.
The bodies A B of the box are connected at their ends by the elastic cords F, the ends'of which are secured to the ends of the said boxes A B above the shoulders, upon which the ends of the covers G D rest, so that the said cords F may have sufiicicnt length to allow the parts of the box to be opened up to stand side by side, as shown in fig. 2.
The box is designed to contain a dozen handkerchiefs-a half-dozen in each part. With this constructio'n, if a customer wishes to purchase only a half-dozen handkerchiefs, the retailer can easily separate the parts of the box by cutting the hinge E and the elastic cords F, thus forming two perfect boxes.
Having thus described my invention,
I-claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved paper box formed in two parts, A Q and B D, hinged to eachother at the side edge of their bottoms by a cloth and paper hinge, E, and connected at their ends by the elastic cords F, substantially as herein shown and described.
