I Specification of Letters Patentl Application filed December 1a, 1913. Seria1NoI-8b7,759;
' To all whom it may concern:
choring fencing and other posts in the ground and consists ofthe improved construction hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is shown as applied to a fencing post,
the lower end of which is tapered.
Figure 1, is an elevation of the lower part of a post and itsanchor plate in position. Fig. 2, an elevation of the lower part of a post with its anchor plate in section and Fig. 3, a
ready to be placedin position. sectional elevation, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of a fastener for securing an anchor. plate upon a post, Fig. 5, a perspective view of the lower. end of a post, Fig. 6, a perspec tive view of an anchor plate. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation of a modified formv of fastener for securing the anchor plate;
The .post 1 illustrated in the drawingis made of sheet iron bent longitudinally into an approximate V shape, and is taperedupward and downward from the surface of the ground. The anchor plate 2 is formed from a piece of sheet iron out into a diamond shape, and is dishedas shown in the drawing. A hole 3 adapted to receive the endl of the post, has its rim at one side 5 pressed outward and at the other "side pressed inward, so that the anchor plate can be tipped over as shown in Fig. 2 while the'end of the post and the anchor plate are being lowered into the hole 7 By tipping the anchor plate in relation to the post the mouth of the hole may be made less than the base thereof. Theundisturbed earth around the hole is firmer "than thesoil replaced inthe hole and will better resistthe upward lift of the anchor plate. The anchor plate is retained E upon the post by closing the bottom of the post until a short length?) (see Fig. 5) is tubular. A washer 10 adapted to pass upon the post is formed with a stem 11 whichwill pass into the tubular part 9. The post is first passed into the hole 3 and then into the hole 12 of the washeflw inis passeaeato the-post sufliciently far to allow. the stem 11 to pass into the post anddown into the hole TED S WENMM E 13 of the tubular part9, see Fig. 3. i The washer 10is mademushroomshaped t0'al 1 low the anchor plate to tip into the position shown in Fig; 2.
Fig. 7 shows the bottom of the post formed with a screw threaded end 14'. A nut 15 retains a washer 16, on two sides of which I the edges are turned downto allow the an-:
chor plate to tip.
What I do claim and desire to secure by {I I i v Letters Patent of the United States is j l ,l
1. The combination with a post, of an) anchor plate mounted thereon'and provided with an opening larger than the engaging partof'the post so as to tilt in relation to the post and having both endsthereof longitudinallycurved upwardly and each tapering to v a point, said plate] also having its sides curved upwardly.
2. The combination with a post, of aidiae mond shaped anchor plate mounted thereon and provided with an opening larger than the engaging part of the post so as to tilt in relation tothe post, said plate being formed of sheet metal and curved upwardly, both longitudinally and laterally, from the center, and means for retaining the plate upon, thepost.
I 4. The combination with a post, of an anchor plate witha hole adapted to receive the 1 .85 3. The combination with a post, of an an-' chor plate having a hole adapted to receive" the end of the post, one edge of the rimof a the hole being deflected relatively to the opposing edge so that said edges are out of.
alinement longitudinally of the anchor plate.
end of the post, one side of the rim of the i hole bein g pressed'outward and the other side'inward.
5. The'combination with a post of an an-y. chor plate having a hole adapted to receive; the end of the post said hole being larger than the engaging part of the post, a washer washer on the post. 7
i 6. The combination with a post 'h'avinga tubular. end, of an anchor plate having a" holeadapted to receive saidtubular end, and
a washer with a depressed outer. edge and 10o with a concaved upper side for retaining the M anchor plate on the post and permitting the plateto tilt, and means for retaining 1 the 10 for retaining the anchor plate on the post,
and means for retaining the Washer 0n the post.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE HUTGHINSON.
