RIB-JOINT nEvioE roe UM nnLLAs.
To-flZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known'that I, JAMES D, WILLIAM- soN, a citizen of the 'UnitedStates, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newa'nd useful'lmprovements in Rib- Joint Devices for Umbrellas, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto rib-joint with the accompanying drawings the novel features of the invention being specifically pointedflout in the subjoined claims. 7 1 Figure l isa sectional view of an upper notch .device embodying;myinvention in' preferred form; andFig. 2 is a similar View illustrating its application to the lowerrunner.
, Fig. 3 is'an eleva'tiontaken at right angles to Fig. 1; is a,bottom-plan view of the main; notch'part and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective. views ofthe retaining ring parts thereof.-. Fig. 7,,is a plan view of the main m -e angaea Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one or other of the two retaining rings, employed therewith and Fig. 9 is a separate view of onef'of the 'and the r1ng '15 is rotatively fixed to 16 by.
pivot wires.
The umbrella stick 2 may be of ordinary construction, excepting that a special spring catch 3 is provided as shown, in connection with the upper notch, for a purpose herein after stated. 1
The main notch ring 5 is formed with a series of radial rib- receiving slots 6, 6, 6, corresponding with the number of ribs em ployed, asusual- The partition wings 7, 7 7, which form the side walls of these slots,
are circularly grooved on their lower faces so as to form circumferential pivot- wire recesses 8, 8, 8; and each is also provided with a second recess 9, arranged at approximately right angles to 8 as indicated and extendin longitudinally, or parallel with the axis, of

angular rib-:pivotlwire 10, when the latter 7 3 so as to permit of the ring. These recesses 8 and 9 are adapted to receivetherespective end portions of is engagedlin'theeye ll of a rib 12 and the latter is entered in one ofthe rib-receiving slots 6; there being a separate rib-pivotv wire 10 for each rib, and'each wire being-adapted to seat at its opposite ends lrespectivelyhin a circumferential recess 8 'ofone partition and" a longitudinal recess? of"'anfa'djacent partition. ,Tof'provide for properlyretainmg these rib-pivot wires 10, and thejrib's l2 suspended' therefrom, in described engagement with the notch .'.ri1ig 5,, I"en1 ploy, as shown, two "'coeperating retaining rings, "15 and 16... These {rings areflprovidedfwith radialslots, 17 {and l8 re'spectively, correspondingwith' the rib receiving slots 6fof the notch ring 5,,so as to permit of its'ribs swingingii freely ,to their closed vertical positions; but one ofthe p'artiti on'wings between-two slots Ofthering 15, isyremove'd, so as to form a widiiedfslot 2Q which serves as an aperture through iwhich a single rib and its, pivot wire may befwithdmwn, while a corresponding, partition lug orv projection 21 is 1 formed on the-cooperatin ring '16 5 to normally .take'fthe placeof the removed par- V tition of, the ring 15', y
f Thenorm l' posi-tions of the' t1pper 1iotch jparts'are indicated in Figs. and3. rib withl'it's pivdtjwire, being s'ecured'in jointed engagement with yth mainfnotch ring 5 bythe retainin fringsfl5jan'd .16. shown the'ring is ormedf with a sleeve portion 16 ,whichengages thes'pecial spring tch 35. ebe fi ml arri d, by the la ,ter, and held against rotation on the stick an engaging pin 30, so that the rib-receiving slots of the several parts are in fixed alinement to permit. free swing of the pivoted ribs. The ring 15 is preferably heldagainst end-wise movement on the stick, by means of aslightly projecting pin 31 as indicated, butthe sleeve ring 16 may be moved when desired, by depressing the soring catch its passing over the latter. T i
In case it becomes necessary to remove a particular rib, the spring catch 3 is thus depressed and the sleeve ring 16 is turned with the ring 15 to'bring'the pivot-wire aperture 20 of the latter into register with such pivot wire from the notch. After replacing this rib and pivot wire, the operation may be repeated as desired, and the parts finally returned to normal position without in any way affecting the other ribs which are constantly held in the notch by the ring 15.
The application of my invention to the lower runner involves only slight structural modifications, as indicated in Figs. 2, 7 and 8. The rib-receiving slots, 6, 6 6 of the runner joint ring 5* are open at the top to permit free swing of the stretchers 12 and no corresponding slots such as are shown in the upper notch construction, are required in the cooperating retaining rings 15 16. Also these latter rings may be mere duplicates, as shown, each having a pivotwire aperture 33, 3a which must be set into register with the pivot-eye end of a stretcher in order to enable the latter to be Withdrawn from. the runner. It will be understood that the runner joint ring 5 is fixed to the runner sleeve 32, while the retaining rings 15*, 16 are rotatably mounted thereon, and that the operation is essentially the same as in the case of the upper notch described; also that the detail constructions which have been specifically described may be readily modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
VWiat I claim is:
1. A rib-joint device for umbrellas comprising a stick ring having regularly spaced rib-slots and partitions provided wit-h pivot- Wire recesses, ribs in said slots having pivotwire apertures, a separate pivot-wire for each rib loosely inserted through the rib-aperture and engageable in said recesses on opposite sides of a rib-slot, and adjustable means for jointly looking or independently releasing said pivot wires.
2. A rib-joint device for umbrellas comprising a stick ring formed with a series of rib-receiving notches and with partitions having series of pivot-wire recesses extendi ing respectively circuinferentially and longitudinally of the ring, a series of angular rib-pivot wires the ends of each of which are engageable respectively in a circumferential. and a longitudinal recess, and adjustable means for jointly looking or independently releasing said pivot Wires.
3. A rib-joint device for umbrellas comprising a stick ring having regularly spaced rib-slots and partitions provided with pivotwire recesses, ribs in said slots having pivotwire apertures, a separate pivot-wire for each rib loosely inserted through the ribaperture and engageable in said recesses on opposite sides of a rib-slot, an adjustable retaining ring having a pivot-wire aperture, and an adjustable aperture covering.
4. A rib-joint device for umbrellas comprising a stick ring having regularly spaced rib-slots and partitions provided with pivotwire recesses, ribs in said slots having pivotwire apertures, a separate pivot-wire for each rib loosely inserted through the ribaperture and engageable in said recesses on opposite sides of a rib-slot, an adjustable retaining ring having a pivot-wire aperture, and an adjustable aperture covering ring.
5. A ribjoint device for umbrellas comprising a notch ring having regularly spaced rib-slots, and partitions provided with pivot-wire recesses; a correspondingly slotted retaining ring having one partition removed to provide a pivot-wire aperture, and a relatively movable cooperating retaining ring having a partition projection.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
