Description

L. ,H. FOWLER. SANDPAPER "GRIPPER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-29, .1914.
. 1,145,134. Patented July 6,1915.
will" H LOGAN H. FOWLER, OF COLONY, KANSAS.
SANDPAPER-GRIPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 11y 6, 1915.
Application filed September 29, 1914. Serial No. 864,143.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOGAN H. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colony, in the county of Anderson and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sandpaper- Grippers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sand paper holders and has for its object novel means for gripping the ends of the paper so that the paper may be set across the face of the holder and held in caught position for use.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with .the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. dis a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line'83 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a block of any suitable material to the upper edge of which is secured a substantially circular bar 2- forming a handie for the manipulation of the device. The ends of the block are cut off upon an incline as shown at 3 so as to lie in planes to converge toward the handle 2 and the face 4 of the block which receives the-paper and 30 ,is tapered or curved off at the end so as to ,,eliminate a sharp corner and thereby preventing the paper from breaking. Secured within the ends, adjacent the upper ends of the block, are staples 5 to which are pivoted the clamping plates 6. These clamping plates have approximately central apertures through which are passed bolts 7 having threaded thereon the ordinary thumb nuts 8 which serves to draw the clamping plates into tight engagement with the end. The bolts 7 have wood screw points so that they are readily threaded into the block and their.
outer ends are provided with kerfs adapted to receive a screw driver bit. Surrounding the bolts and arranged between the ends of the block and the clamping plates 6 are helical springs 9 having their base seated in shallow depressions 10 formed in the end of the block. These springs normally tend tow-force the clamping plates away from the ends 3 so that, when said plates are released by unscrewing the thumb nuts, they will move' outwardly and away from the ends so as to facilitate the removal of the sand paper or the insertion'of anew sheet.
It will be "clearly understood that while I have illustrated the invention in connection with a sand paper holder, that it is also well adapted for holding blotting paper and the like, the face i being either straight or curved as desired. a
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described, comprising a member, a pair of beveled and recessed paper mounting faces thereon terminating in a rounded bottom edge, pivoted plates upon the mounting faces having a central opening therein of less diameter than the recess in said faces, screws secured within the paper mounting faces and adapted, to
pass through the openings in the plates,
springs disposed within the above mentioned recesses and adapted for normally forcing said plat-es an equal distance throughout their length, away from the beveled faces and thumb nuts upon the screws adapted to normally act in opposition to said springs, when clamping said plates against the ends of the members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOGAN H. FOWLER.
