SAMPLE-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application led March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,229.
To all whom it may concern.' Be it known that I, VALTER FACH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the f.
borough of Richmond, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to books for mounting, binding and exhibiting samples of fabrics, laces, or the like and for the convenient handling of the samples.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure l represents a side view of my invention, Fig. 2 a sectional view through lines 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a plane view of the backing sheet.
The backing sheets A, made preferably of flexible cardboard, have attached thereto the swatches B representing differently colored or different grades of cloth, lace or the like. As many swatches may be placed on a backing as desirable. The backings A have notches or nicks I). D. one on each side. I prefer to reinforce the backings with a strip ofcardboard C, or the like secured to the backing sheets A throughout their entire adjoining surfaces for the purpose of keeping the backings from buckling in binding them in the book and for that purpose glue the reinforce to the backing. I prefer to make the reinforce slightly thicker than the swatches so that the book is thicker at the reinforced end than at the opposite end so that there is no contact of the backing and swatch, thereby avoiding the tendency of the swatches being rubbed off the backing. The reinforces are provided with notches or nicks corresponding in position with the notches or nicks in the backings. As many of the backings and reinforces may be used to a sample book as convenient but it is necessary to have all the backings and reinforces in a book of the same width so that the notches or nicks in the backings and reinforce correspond. The backings and reinforces are placed between a stiff upper cover F, having a hinge at I, and under cover G both having notches or nicks corresponding with the notches or nicks in the backings and reinforces. The notches or nicks in the backings, reinforces and covers form channels E. E. A band H which I prefer to be wider than the base of the notches D, which band is placed around the covers and in the channels E. E. and the ends secured together, thereby binding the backings, reinforces and covers together. rIhe band being wider than the channels will crimp or fold in the channels, thereby overcoming the tendency of the band to cut or tear the backing sheets and reinforce.
My invention permits the convenient insertion or removal of a backing as the eX- hibition of a particular article is discontinued or a new article is to be added to the book for exhibition. I prefer to pass the band II through the slot J, on the inside of the cover G and out through the slot K so that the band cannot be misplaced.
What I claim is:
l. In a sample book in combination a plurality of backings having corresponding notches, a band wider than the base of the notches, the band being crimped in the notches.
2. In a sample book, in combination, a plurality of backings, samples on the backings, a reinforce in permanent surface engagement with each of the backings, a cover for the backings, the backings, reinforces and cover having corresponding notches, a band crimped in the notches and passing through the cover, the ends of the band beingsecured together.
3. In a sample book in combination backings, samples on the backings, reinforces on the backings permanently secured to the backings surface to surface, notches in the reinforces and backings, a band wider than the base of the notches flexible throughout its entire length, and crimped in the notches.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER FACH. Witnesses:
W. B. KLEIN, F RED A. KLEIN.
