FRANK N. MEB'IES, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
' w FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed September 1, 1914. Serial No. 859,694.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK N. Mnn'rns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to a device of this character especially designed for fastening or looking a door in closed position.
An object of the invention is the provision of a fastener which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and cheaply and conveniently attachable to a door or other hinged closure.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specially described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional view, partly broken away, through a door and door' frame, showing the application of the fastener thereto. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the fastener removed. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view through the fastener in locked position. Fig. 4 represents a fragmental perspective view of one end of the fastener, and Fig. 5 represents a top plan view, partly broken away, of one end of the blank of sheet metal from which the fastener is formed, showing in dotted lines where the metal is bent.
Referring to drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates an anchoring plate having laterally projecting teeth 6 at one end and an aperture or depression 7 adjacent said teeth. The opposite end of the anchoring plate 5 is formed with an aperture receiving the pin or rivet 8 pivotally securing thereto the spring locking member 9. A cam shaped flange 10 is formed on the inner face andat the free extremity of the locking member 9 and is provided centrally with a tooth or lug 11 adapted to spring into the opening 7 in the anchoring plate 5 when the locking member 9 is swung to looked position, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The fastener herein described is preferably formed or stamped from resilient sheet metal of adequate thickness, and the locking member 9 carrying the cam shaped flange 10 is cut in the shape illustrated in Fig. 5 and subsequently bent upon the dotted lines illustrated in said figure.
In use, the teeth 6 of the anchoring plate 5 are inserted in the door frame A, and the door B is subsequently closed and .the looking member 9 swung to the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The locking member 9 is flexed when the cam or flange 10 engages the inner face of the plate 5 and is retained in spaced relation to the anchoring plate 5 by the flange 10, the tension of the plate 5 and member 9 automatically seating the lug 11 in the seat or opening 7 and thus reliably locking the parts in locked position. To release the door B the locking member 9 is moved to withdraw the lug 11 from the opening 7 and is subsequently swung outwardlyto the position illustrated in Fig. 2, thus permitting the door B to be opened and the fastener removed.
What I claim is:
A fastener comprising an anchoring plate having an aperture adjacent one end, laterally projecting teeth at said apertured end, a spring locking member pivotally secured to the opposite end of said anchoring plate, a cam-shaped flange formed on the free end of said locking member adapted to engage the adjacent face of the anchoring plate to retain the latter and said locking member in spaced relation, and a lug formed centrally of said flange adapted to engage within said aperture to lock said plate and said member against relative movement.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK N. MERTES.
