FLEXIBLE COVER FOR DRAFTING-TABLES, DESKS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 11915.
Application filed May 7, 1914. Serial No. 837,098.
To (HZ wh am it may concern Be it known that l, EDWARD GRAND, J12, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Covers for Drafting-Tables, Desks, and the like. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in flexible covers for drafting tables, desks and the like as described in the present specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in the combination with a tubular casing formed with a longitudinally extending aperture, and provided with securing brackets, of a spring actuated roller carrying a flexible cover adapted to fit therein.
The objects of my invention are to provide a new, simple and inexpensive device of this class particularly adapted. for covering, to any required extent, drawing tables, desks and the like thus preserving the objects thereon from dust, and, as the flexible material may be waterproof, from damp.
A further object is to provide a cover of this class that will be absolutely flexible and so arranged as to cover objects on the whole table or desk or on a portion thereof.
With these and other objects in view reference is now had to the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure, and in which- Figure 1 is an isometrial view showing my device attached to a ta; le. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line XX of Fig. 1
looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig.
3 is a view showing the longitudinally apertured tube or casing with a spring operated roller in dotted lines therein. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view showing part of easing. Fig. 5 is a view of the movable end closing lock for tube. Fig. 6 is an isometrical View of the closing end lock.
Referring to the drawings. A is the table having fixedly secured thereto my improved device B, consisting of the tubular portion or casing E formed with a longitudinally extendingaperture or slot. One of the sides of said slot or aperture being folded over to form the longitudinally extending tubular bead e, and the other side of said slot being other end is provided with a movable locking end K folded at m to form a hinge or securing means for a staple formed with the prongs Z and Z, adapted to fit into the tubular beads e and e.
N is the tubular portion or collar of the locking end 70. Within the tubular casing is a spring actuated roller (Z having folded thereon the flexible cover or cloth C, and
provided with a square end 9, and end adapted to fit respectively into the sockets g and 9 in the ends of the tube 6.
H is a reinforcing wire used in folding the sides of the slot, and I is a loop formed at one end of the casing E to correspond with the loop formed at the other end by the locking end on In.
From the foregoing the operation of mv device will be apparent. The rolled flexible sheet having been placed in the tube and securely locked therein by the insertion of the prongs Z and Z in the beads e and e is ready to be drawn out by means of the ring thereon p, as shown in Fig. 2. The roller for said sheet being spring operated, said sheet can be extended to cover the whole of the table A or only a portion thereof and retained in these positions.
By the above-mentioned construction it will be noticed that the flexible sheet is always in position for use, and is adapted to run only in the way required, and can be readily retracted and cased when not in use.
What I claim for my invention is:
A device of this class described consisting of a tube or casing of suitable material formed with a longitudinally extending slot or aperture therein, one of the edges of-said slot being folded to form a longitudinally extending pipe like bead, and the other of said edges being folded to form a runner or lip, and underneath a corresponding extended pipe-shaped bead, movable locking means for one end of said casing comprising a hinged portion, a pronged staple therein means for said folded sides of the casing- 10 aperture, said casing provided with a plurality of brackets for fixedly securing it in position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of the undersigned Witness at the city of Ottawa,
this 29 day of April, 1914.
EDWARD GRAND, JR.
WVitness W. T. CUFFE-QUIN.
