(Cl. 45--131) This invention generally pertains to drafting boards or tables, and it particularly relates to an improved paper holder for use with and attachable to a drafting board.

While devices of the general character described herein have previously been known, the present invention comprehends an improved paper holder for use with a drafting board which constitutes an improvement thereupon, both as to efficiency derived from the structural differences and simplicity of its construction as well as the economy with which it maybe produced.

An important object of this invention is the provision of a paper holder for use with drafting boards which is attachable to a drafting board adjacent the edge surface thereof and which is adapted to receive and retain the drawing sheets in coiled relationship so as to permit the production of cleaner and neater drawings.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a paper holder for use with drafting boards which is provided with open ends so that relatively large drawings may be easily handled and worked upon by the draftsman without the draftsman having to reach and stretch across the board since the drawings are maintained in closely spaced relationship to the working position of the draftsman.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a paper holder for use with drafting boards in which the sheets of drawing may be easily fed into the paper holder merely by the application of sliding movement to the paper sheets so that the drawings may be readily withdrawn and inserted.

A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a paper holder for drafting boards which is constructed so as to conceal unused portions of the sheets of drawing and which eliminates frayed, creased and torn drawings.

Other objects of this invention reside in the provision of a paper holder for drafting boards which does not obstruct the use of the board in the normal manner, which occupies relatively little space adjacent the edge surface of the drafting board, and which may be easily and quickly attached to drafting boards of various sizes.

The above and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed specification, appended claims and attached drawing.

Referring to the drawings, which illustrate the invention, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts or elements throughout the several views:

FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of my novel paper holder as attached adjactent the edge surface of a drawing board;

FIG. 2 is a view in bottom plan thereof, some parts being broken away and some parts shown in section;

FIG. 3 is an enlarged view in section taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1; and

FIG. 4 is a view in perspective of the sleeve liner of this invention.

With continuing reference to the drawings, a drafting board 1 is shown therein. The upper surface of the drafting board 1 is represented by the reference numeral 2, the lower surface of the drafting board 1 is represented by the reference numeral 3, and one edge surface thereof is represented by the reference numeral 4. The paper holding device which comprises the present invention is represented in its entirety by the reference numeral "ice 5. The paper holder 5 comprises an elongated casing 6 the opposite ends 7 of which are open and which is cross-sectionally generally J-shaped, as shown particularly in FIG. 3. The elongated casing 6 comprises a generally semi-cylindrical portion 8 for disposition adjacent the edge surface 4 of the drawing board 1 with the axis of the semi-cylindrical portion 8 in general parallelism therewith. The semi-cylindrical portion 8 of the casing 6 defines an axially extending generally flat edge flange 9 which is disposed in spaced relation to the edge surface 4 of the drawing board 1 when the paper holder 5 is attached thereto.

The elongated casing 6 further comprises a generally fiat portion 10 which extends generally tangentially with respect to the semi-cylindrical portion 8 thereof. The flat portion 10 of the elongated casing 6 defines a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 11 adapted to receive a plurality of suitable screws 12 for attaching the elongated casing 6 to the lower surface 3 of the drawing board 1, as shown particularly in FIGS. 2 and 3.

In accordance with this invention, the novel paper holder 5 further comprises an elongated generally tubular sleeve liner 13 the opposite ends 14 of which are open. The sleeve liner 13 is co-axially received in the elongated casing 6, as shown particularly in FIG. 3. The sleeve liner 13 defines a longitudinal slot 15 extending between its opposite ends 14, and the sleeve liner 13 is disposed with its said longitudinal slot 15 opening in the space between the edge flange 9 of the elongated casing 6 and the edge surface 4 of the drafting board 1. The longitudinally extending edges of the sleeve liner 13 which define the longitudinal slot 15 thereof are rounded, as at 16, so as to reduce friction and prevent the bruising of sheets of drawing paper passing thereby. The interior of the sleeve liner 13 defines a paper holding chamber 17 adapted to receive a sheet of drawing paper to be coiled therein, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.

In accordance with this invention, the convolution of the semi-cylindrical portion 8 of the elongated casing 6 is greater than and the edge flange 9 of the semicylindrical portion 8 is depressed slightly inwardly to increase the frictional engagement between the casing 6 and the sleeve liner 13 whereby to provide retention of the sleeve liner independently of its abutment with the edge surface 4 of the drafting board 1. With this construction of the depressed edge flange 9, the inner diameter of the semi-cylindrical portion 8 of the casing 6 is slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the sleeve liner 13 so that when the sleeve liner 13 is clamped within the elongated casing 6, the portion of the sleeve liner 13 adjacent the depressed edge flange 9 of the casing 6 is also depressed slightly radially inwardly, as shown particularly in FIG. 3.

When a sheet of drafting paper, as illustrated in the drawings, is inserted through the longitudinal slot 15 of the sleeve liner 13, the paper will coil within the sleeve liner 13 in the manner shown particularly in FIG. 3. Although the sleeve liner 13 is snugly retained within the elongated casing 6, the sleeve liner 13 may be rotated therewithin. It is desirable that the sleeve liner 13 will be positioned as shown in FIG. 3 when the paper is being inserted or removed therefrom from the upper surface 2 of the drafting board 1. However, when the drafting paper has been completely coiled within sleeve liner 13, the latter may be rotated to protect the drafting paper contained therein.

The novel paper holder as described herein provides an exceedingly eflicient and convenient assembly which lends itself to economical production. This invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects; and while I have shown described above a preferred embodirnent thereof in which the principals of the present invention have been incorporated, I Wish it to be specifically understood that the same may be modified Without departure from the scope and spirit of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A paper holder for use with a drafting board having upper and lower surfaces and an edge surface, said holder comprising:

(a) an elongated casing having open ends and which is cross-sectionally generally J-shaped and has a generally semi-cylindrical portion for disposition adjacent the edge surface of the board with its axis in general parallelism therewith, said casing also comprising a generally flat portion for attachment to the drafting board, said semi-cylindrical portion of said casing having an axially extending generally fiat edge flange disposed in spaced relation to the edge surface of the board,

(1)) an elongated generally tubular sleeve liner having open ends and co-axially received in said casing,

said sleeve liner defining therewithin a paper holding chamber, said sleeve liner having a longitudinal slot extending generally between its opposite ends, and said sleeve liner being in its normal position 5. disposed within said casing with its said longitudinal slot opening in the space between the edge flange of said casing and the edge surface of said board to permit a sheet of paper to pass therethrough for coiling reception within said paper holding chamber, and

(c) the convolution of said semi-cylindrical portion of the casing being greater than 180, and said edge flange of said semi-cylindrical portion being depressed slightly inwardly for frictional engagement between the casing and the sleeve liner and also to provide retention of the sleeve liner independently of the drafting board.

2. The structure defined in claim 1 wherein said sleeve liner is rotatable within said casing between its said normal position and a second position wherein the longitudinal slot thereof is generally covered by said casing or an adjacent surface of said board.

Claims (1)

1. A PAPER HOLDER FOR USE WITH A DRAFTING BOARD HAVING UPPER AND LOWER SURFACES AND AN EDGE SURFACE, SAID HOLDER COMPRISING: (A) AN ELONGATED CASING HAVING OPEN ENDS AND WHICH IS CROSS-SECTIONALLY GENERALLY J-SHAPED AND HAS A GENERALLY SEMI-CYLINDRICAL PORTION FOR DISPOSITION ADJACENT THE EDGE SURFACE OF THE BOARD WITH ITS AXIS IN GENERAL PARALLELISM THEREWITH, SAID CASING ALSO COMPRISING A GENERALLY FLAT PORTION FOR ATTACHMENT TO THE DRAFTING BOARD, SAID SEMI-CYLINDRICAL PORTION OF SAID CASING HAVING AN AXIALLY EXTENDING GENERALLY FLAT EDGE FLANGE DISPOSED IN SPACED RELATION TO THE EDGE SURFACE OF THE BOARD, (B) AN ELONGATED GENERALLY TUBULAR SLEEVE LINER HAVING OPEN ENDS AND CO-AXIALLY RECEIVED IN SAID CASING, SAID SLEEVE LINER DEFINING THEREWITHIN A PAPER HOLDING CHAMBER, SAID SLEEVE LINER HAVING A LONGITUDINAL SLOT EXTENDING GENERALLY BETWEEN ITS OPPOSITE ENDS, AND SAID SLEEVE LINER BEING IN ITS NORMAL POSITION DISPOSED WITHIN SAID CASING WITH ITS SAID LONGITUDINAL SLOT OPENING IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE EDGE FLANGE OF SAID CASING AND THE EDGE SURFACE OF SAID BOARD TO PERMIT A SHEET OF PAPER TO PASS THERETHROUGH FOR COILING RECEPTION WITHIN SAID PAPER HOLDING CHAMBER, AND (C) THE CONVOLUTION OF SAID SEMI-CYLINDRICAL PORTION OF THE CASING BEING GREATER THAN 180*, AND SAID EDGE FLANGE OF SAID SEMI-CYLINDRICAL PORTION BEING DEPRESSED SLIGHTLY INWARDLY FOR FRICTIONAL ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN THE CASING AND THE SLEEVE LINER AND ALSO TO PROVIDE RETENTION OF THE SLEEVE LINER INDEPENDENTLY OF THE DRAFTING BOARD.
