A. L. W. S'TROUD.
Improvement in Plows. No. 114,221. PatentedApril25,1871.

AROHIBALD L. W. STROUD, OF MUNFORD, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,221, dated April 25, 1871 antedated April 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD L. W. STROUD, of the town of Munford, in the county of Talladega, andin the State of Alabama, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan View, of my plow. Fig. 3 is also a plan view, showing the side beams, to which the plows are connected, placed to make the plows work side by side.
A represents the center beam of my plow, to the front end of which the team is to be attached. 'At the rear end of the beam A is a standard, 13, having a cross-bar at or near the upper end, to which cross-bar the handles 0 are attached, the lower front ends of said handles being attached to the beam A. On each side of the center beam A is secured a short beam,D,to whichis attached the footE,saidfoot being braced by the screw-rod G, and having a plow fastened to its lower end. The beams D D are secured to the center beam A by means of three bolts, a a, passing through said center beam at equal distances apart, and through the shortbeams at orneartheir ends, the center bolt passing through the front end of one side beam and the rear end of the other. The dis tance of said side beams from the center beam, and consequently the distance between the plows, is regulated by means of slotted blocks I), slipped over the bolts a, and fastened by the nuts which secure the beams. The blocks or washers b b being slotted, they can readily be taken oif and put on by merely loosening the nuts, m'thout removing the bolts or the beams from the bolts.
The bolts 04 a being at equal distances apart, the side beams D D maybe placed directly opposite each other when desired to run on both sides of the plant at the same time.
Upon one of the feet E is secured an ordinary plowshare, H, but upon the other-that is, the one running in frontI use a guardplow, I. This plow consists of an ordinary plowshare, with aIguard extending upward at right angles from the outer edge, said guard being curved and sharpened at its lower edge.
When the beams D D are placed opposite each other for the purposes above mentioned, I intend to use such a guard-plow on each foot.
I am aware of the patent granted to J. L. Hood for cultivator, July 13, 1869, and I do, therefore, not claim as my invention any of the features shown by him.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,,is-
The side beams D D, with their feet E E plows H or I, and braces G G, when attached to the center beam A by means of three bolts, to a, at equal distances apart, so that the side beams may be placed one in advance of the other, or side by side, as may be desired, and the distance of said side beams from the center beam is regulated by the slotted washers b I), all as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of August, 1870.
AROHIBALD L. W. STROUD.
