Description

T. CHAMBERS.
LOOSE LEAF BINDER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-31,1914.
' OFFICE.
THOMAS CHAMBERS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed August 31, 1914. Serial No. 859,489.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a perspective view of a loose leaf employed in the construction, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of a modified form of loose leaf which may be employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a cover member 5 and a plurality of loose leaf members 6, the cover member being provided on its inner face and each of the leaves on both sides with border strips or flanges 7 having their free edges held by stitches 8 for the reception of sample cards. Each of the leaves 6 is reinforced at its inner edge by two metallic rods 9 incorporated therein and slots 10 are provided in the leaves adjacent said rods. Straps in the form of tape are secured to the corresponding edge of cover member 5 at any position to pass through the slots 10 in leaves 6 and serve as a means for effecting a hinge joint connection of leaves to the cover member and to each other. A flexible flap 12 of suitable cloth or other material is secured to the rear edge of cover member 5 and is adapted to serve as a back for the leaves 6. Said flap is provided with rows of slots 13 positioned to receive the straps 11 as indicated. Another cover memher 14 is also provided and is reinforced at its rear'edge by a rod 15 and is provided with notches 16 adjacent said rod adapted to receive the straps 11. Cover member 14 is also provided with buckles 17 set back from the rear edge thereof and adapted to receive and secure the free ends of the straps 11. By this arrangement any desired number of loose leaves 6 may be threaded upon the straps 11, the flap 12 drawn over the rear edges of said leaves to form a backing therefor and secured in place by passing the straps 11 through the proper notches 13 and any surplus of flap'12 may be folded as indicated in Fig. 1 and secured in folded position by passing the straps through proper notches 13 and securing the ends of said straps by means of buckles 17. It will be observed that the straps 11 are passed outwardly through notches 13 thence through notches 16 and thence back through the same notches 18 thus efi'ecting a close, effective and adjustable hinge joint for the cover member 14. This constitutes a simple and efficient construction for the purpose and a construction in which the different leaves may be readily laid out flat for the inspection of samples or sample cards thereon.
In Fig. 4 I haveillustrated a modified form of leaf which consists of a single sheet of paper 18 reinforced at one end by a single rod 19 and provided with slots 20 adapted to receive the straps 11. This leaf is designed for use by pasting or otherwise attaching the sample directly to the leaf.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising a cover member; flexible elements at one edge thereof; leaves provided with means cooperating with said flexible elements to effect a hinge joint: a flexible flap on said edge of said cover member provided with rows of openings corresponding to said flexible elements; a second cover member having openings adjacent one edge, said flexible elements being passed through openings in said flap, through the openings in said second cover member and back through the same openings in said flap; and means for securing the free ends of said elements, substantially as described.
2. A loose leaf binder comprising a cover member; flexible elements at one edge thereof; leaves having reinforcing rods extending along one edge thereof and slots adjacent said rods to receive said elements; a flexible flap secured to saidedge of said cover member and provided with rows of slots adapted to receive-said elements; a second cover member provided with a reinforcing rod along one edge thereof and slots adjacent said rods to receive said elements; and buckles on the inner side of said second cover member positioned somewhat back from the edge thereof and adapted to engage said elements, substantially as described.
3. A loose leaf binder comprising a cover member; flexible straps at one edge thereof; leaves having reinforcing .rods extending along one edge thereof and slots adjacent said rods to receive said straps; a flexible flap secured to said edge of said cover member and provided with rows of slots adapted to receive said straps; a second cover member provided with a reinforcing rod along one edge thereof and slots adjacent said rod to receive said straps; and buckles on the inner side of said second cover member positioned somewhat back from the edge thereof and adapted to engage said straps, substantially as described.
4. A loose leaf binder comprising a cover member; flexible straps at one edge thereof; leaves having reinforcing rods extending along one edge thereof and slots adjacent said rods to receive said straps; a flexible flap secured tosald edge of sa1d cover member and provided with rows of slots adapted THOMAS CHAMBERS.
