J. F. CARVERi DISPLAY CONTAINER.
APPucATmH min :uns 3o, 1914.
Patented June 8,1915.
SGEN l?. CARVER, QF ROSLENXBLLE,
DSPLAY-CONTIER.
Specicaton of Letters atent..
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that l, JOHN F. CARVER, citizen of the United States, residing at Roslindale, county ci Suiellr9 State of Massachusette, have invented a certain netsT and useful .improvement in Displity-Containers7 of which/the following is a speciiication, refer ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 4
The invention relates to a new and useul improvement in display boxesor containers. lt is a common practice to pack a certain niiniber of small boxes of merchandise in a as `ordinarily constructed, the container should be kept full all the time, that is, if
one of the boxes-is removed, as by a sale to:
a customer, it should be replaced by another box so as to always maintain a symmetrical appearance of the container. y
The object of thepresent invention is to reduce a display container which shall liave the appearance of a full box, even after a considerable number of the small boxes have been removed from the container -and no replacement has been made.
The invention will be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features tliereoi2 will be p'cintedout and clearly define-Cl in the claims` at the close of the specificaicn.
In the dravvings,-Figuie l is a perspective view'of a display container embodying the invention entirely closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view 'of the container showing the flap cover open to displayv the contents' and give access to the small boxes Within the container. F 1g. 3 is a plan View of a blank formed oi an integral sheet of material which may *be folded to form the container.
be packed in the container and just ill it.-
Tlie box is preferably of a knoclndown form mafie of a single sheet ofi pa er, as shown m Fig. 3. as will be herema ter described,
but not necessarily of that particular forni. The top of the bor is termed with a iiap cover portion l which is oa width equal to one oi athe inclosed boxes B and is hinged. or otiie., se flexibly connected with one edge of the body the bon so that it can be thrown baci slio'wn in Fig. 2 to display the centen s c; the container or it may I vv 4 be shut, as snoran in .e i5-to close the container. the rorrn of container shown for* illustration it is adapted to hold six small boxes in each layer, three rows of tvvo boxes each running Widtlivvise or" the container and there may be several tiers or layers in depth. The nap cover l is or a width equal to one of sniall bones B and of a length equal to tivo ci` said 4lf3-elses and ,is sym- Inerically arranged to cover the middle ror';r of email boxes. @n thef opposite sides of the said nap cover there are the cover portions 12, 3 respectively vwhich are intended to remain permanently closed after the container is set up3 eac-li one of said portions Q., 3 coveri' l iront to rear, one ci the rows bones l. The ap cover l op portions 2, 3 are paueied olf n th pa el portions Il, 5; (i, 7; 8a3; corresponding i i e :li the top face ortho sniall bones .B and are preferably printed in facsi; ace #portion of said boxes B so i" en the Eap cover is closed the 'entire ci container Will have the appearance of the sinillrboxes and when tne iap cover is open ing tiro or' the small boites B the tivo end cover portions f e; two eposed b. wstill have the aine appearance of e container nll ot' small bones.
Preferably, 'th K told crcssn'ise of tl shown in and l() n'liicli when the iiap co. back to e. vertical o I 2, may be engag ot or between one of he boxes ie back side of the container to bold the flap cover in upright position and display t A tainer. By reason ci tie cover also being in this'npriglit position and folded in the iniddie, there is a full panel beth on the ether with the s adapted to shown in Fig.
front and the back etA nap cover which conspicuously displays the advertising matter in the panel similar to that on the boxes, as already described.
Preferably the panels #l 5 which forni the thereof, as "li a tongue is brought be contents o1 the con.
hinge cover are printed in inverted arrangement relative to each other on the flat blank.
so that when the cover is turned up in easel form as shown in Fig. 2 the reading on both panels will be from the top'down. `It is ob vious that the printingA being all on one face panels may beprinted which it was taken beneath the closed top portions 2, 3 will not be noticeable to the outside observer evenfthough the two endv tiers be entirely taken away, and in looking down upon the containerit will still appearl 4as though it were entirely full. As the flap cover comprises only a portion of the top of the zontainer, the larger part of the boxes in the-container are covered over'even when the flap cover is turned back, and thus they are protected from dust and also from eX1 posure to light which fades the boxes and renders them less attractive. Moreover, the side portions of the container are supported and strengthened by the portions of the top which remainl permanently closed.
As already stated, the box is preferably made of a single sheet of material out out and'scored, 'as indicated in Fig. 3, which lso ` shows theblanlr laid out flat. Referring to said Fig. 3,--the portion of the-'blank which inelud'esthe panels 6, 7 ;A 4,5.; 8., 9; will together form the top and lap'cover of the container;v it vhas a panel portion l1 which i when'the box is set up forms the front side of the box, afiat vportion 12 which will be folded along the dotted line between 12 and 11 to form the bottom/ofthe container, a rear ap portion 13 which will form the rear side of the container, and two end ' flap portions 14, 15 which will form respectively the two end portions of the container. The rear side portion 13 is formed'with a narrow Hap or tuck portion 16 which when the box is set up will be tucked in under the adj aoent edge of the bottom lforming flap 12, and gluedthereto and thetwo end panels 14,' 15 are formed respectively with the tuck flap portions 17, 18 which will be tucked in between the said end portions 14, 15 and the bottomv portion 12. There are also provided the four rectangular corner 'tuck flaps 19, 20; 21, 22; which 'are turned and tucked in vbetween the'end portions 14, lland' rear and front side portions 11, 13 respectively. The cover iap is formed out of the integral sheet by slitting along the side lines 23 and 24 and valong the front 25""following around the outline of the tongue 10 so as to form' the tongue piece; and this will leavea notch 27 v in the upper edge of the front wall`11,which makes it convenient to remove the top front y `chandise, sai -cover for a portion of .the top and an inf Vbox with the thumb or' linger which may easily take hold of the front edge'of the box at the point exposed by the notch. The
bending lines between the severed portions. It is-obvious that the form of the blank louto which the container is made may be tion of the top of the box as well as forv the cover and if desired the flap cover may be lwide enough to'cover two or more rowsy of small boxes from frontfto rear instead of one row as shown.
The term hinged cover vor cover is intended to apply whether thercover 'I blank will be scored or creased along the is a separate portion hinged to the wallof I the container, or whether it is'integral withl the wall and creased or bent so that it willv fold on the edg'e as shown in the'drawings.- What I claim is: 1. A display container for boxes of merchandise, saidcontainer having a topcover,
a portion of said topleover comprising a I portion movable with relation to' the remaining top portion,- said top portions-being marked' to represent a plurality ot panels each of which-is of a size'and shape like the top face of one of the smaller boxes'which the container isintended to hold.`
2. A display container for boxes of merchandise, said container having a hinged cover portion for a portion only. of the topA surface of the container and an independent ,cover portion for the remainingsurface of the top of the container, all of said'top portions being paneled off to form panels eachof which is printed-like the top surface cf hold. I f
3. A displa container for boxes of vmercontainer vhaving a hinged dependent cover-portion for the remaining surface of the top of the container, allof said top portions being paneled o' tof orm panels each of which is printed like the top surface of the boxes which` the container 1s intended to hold, the said hinged coverportion being of a size and shape. equal to a a multiple of the top face of the smaller boxes within thel container and said hi' ed cover and other cover portions having t e panels marked in replica of the markings on the ,top of the boxeswithin the container.
4. A dis lay container for boxes of mere chandise', ormed of a single sheet of material blanked out, said blank having a body portion which forns 4the top of the container when setlvlmtwof side .and two end 1 Hap' portions whleh form the sidesand ends of, the'.l container, one of said side flap `porties here, extension sleek ,forms the 105 A the boxes which the container'is intendedto bottom of the container, tuck flaps connecting the said side and end forming flaps, said top forming portion being printed on its npper face in panel arrangement, each panel being printed like the top face of each or' the boxes which the container is intended to hold, the said top being slit to form a portion thereor1 into a hinge cover comprising one or more of said printed panel portions complete, said hinge cover having also a tongue integral therewith which is slit ont of the front side portion of the container, said cover portion extending from the front to the rear edge of the top and folded transversely oi' its rniddle, the rear edge of said cover portion being creased to forni the hinge and having a slit therein to receive the said tongue when said hinged cover is folded upon itself. 4
