To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, OLIVER E. VANAsoALn, a citizen of the United States, residingiat Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Screens, of which the followingis a specifi cation. I
This invention relates to lmprovements in window screensofthe class of rolling.
window screens in which the screen is arranged to be automatically rolled upon a drum when not in use, and toextend over the open portion of the window and to automatically accommodateitself to the size of the opening as the window is raised and lowered, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devicesof this character; l
Another object'of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be attached without material structural change to sashes of various sizes and materials and which may be applied either to the upper'or lower sash."
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily disconnected from the sash and dis osed out of sight when not in use.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illus trative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of; a conventional window viewed from the in-; side with the improvement applied to thelower sash. Fig.2 isan' enlarged vertical section on the line 2- -2 of Fig. 1 with the lower sash closed. Fig. 3 isa horizontal sectional view, the frame, lower sash and guides being in section on the line 3'3 of Fig. 1, and the housing for the winding mechanism iii section on the line 4-4 of Fig.1. Fig. is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the improved device applied to the upper sash. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of one of the roller brackets. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the ,followingdescription and indicated in all the views of the drawings these parts being of the usual construction.
The improved device will be located upon the stool or'inside sill 12when applied to the'lower sash and'will be attached to the lower side :of the lintel portion of the. frame when appliedto the upper sash.
The improved device includes 'a casing for containing the rolling, drum'and' other mechanismand comprises the base 16, ends 17, top 18 and front 19, thefront of the casing being preferably hinged-at 20 to the bottom 16 while the top 18 is preferably hinged at 21 to the front 19 so that the interior of the casing is readily accessible for installing the screen rolling mechanism and for removing or repairing the same without destroying any of the parts. The casing opens at its rear side toward the sash-with its'top 18 spaced'at its rear edge from the inner face of the sash, as shown. Secured to thebottom member 16 of the casing at its ends are L-shaped brackets 22, one of the brackets having a bayonet slot 23 while the other' bracket is provided witha circular bearing 24. The brackets are designedto support the journals of a spring actuated winding roller comprising a shell or casing 25 which is provided with a circular bear- Patented'June 8; 1915-.
ing or journal 28 at one end to engage in the circular bearing 24 and with a core member 29 extending through the opposite end and having a flat terminal 30 to engage in the bayonet slot 23. A spring 31 surrounds the core 29 and is connected at one end at 32 ets 23 is likewise provided with an open slot l 34 to receive the journals of a guide roller 35, the latter being spaced" away from the spring winding roller 25. The screen material is represented conventionally at 36 and is attached at one end to the roller 25 and passes beneath the guide roller and is secured at its opposite end in a strip 37, the latter being detachably connected by-screws or other suitable devices 38 to the inner face of the lower member of the lower sash 14 or to the upper member of the upper sash 13, as:

Attached to the confronting faces of the inside stops l5are guide strips 39 each having a vertical groove 40 to receive the projecting-edge-of the screen-material 36.. *The holding strip 37 extends only between the confronting faces of the guide strips 39 and is slidably disposed between them-,while the screen material projects at its edges beyond the ends of the strip 37 and into the-guide grooves 40. By this-means the joint be-" tween the screen material and the strips 39 is continuous and insect-proof as'it runs up when the sash is raised the screen material and down with the sash. Thus, no open spaces occur between the edges of the screen material and the strip, no matter" in what' position the'parts may be disposed. r
The force of the spring 31, is continuous, or exerts a continuous winding force upon the screen material,'consequently when the sash is open the pulling force of the spring would have a tendency to close the sash, and to prevent this, it may be necessary to apply a holding device to the sash, and for thepurpose of illustration a conventional cam device 41 is shown applied to one of the'guide strips 39 in a position to engage the sash and lock the samein any'desired position. By this simple arrangement when the sash is in its lower or closed positionthe screenmate- .rial will be automatically wound upon the drum or roller25 and be entirely concealed within thecasing, and no portion will extend over the glass of the sash. Consequently, when the sash is closed the screen material does not obstruct the view. Then,
will be unwound from the drum and entirely cover and protect the opening between the sash and the sill, when applied to the lower sash, or between the upper sash and the lintel ofv the frame when applied to the the invention, what is claimed as new is:
v In a device of the class described, a casing adapted to be attached to a window and including a cover member spaced at its inner edge fronrthe path of'the adjacent sash member of the window, a holding-strip adapted to be attached tosaidsash and to. completely fill the space between the casing cover and the sash when the sash is closed,
the outer face of the cover member and forming a continuation of the same, and screen material attached at one edge to said strip and adapted to be disposed within said "casing.
2. In a device of the'classdescribed, a casing adapted to be attached to a window, bracketswithin said casing and having j ournal bearings and open slots, :1 spring actuated" roller having journals engaging the bearings of said brackets, a guide roller having journals detachably engaging said open slots, and screen material connected at one end to said roller and adapted to be connected atthe other end to a window sash and engaging over said guide roller.
3. In a device of the class described, a casing adapted to be attached to a window, brackets within said casing and having journal bearings and open slots, a spring'actuated roller having journals engaging the bearings of said brackets, a guide rollerhavingjournals detachably engaging said open slots, grooved guide strips adapted to be attached to a window, and screen material connected at one end to said roller and adapted to be connected at the other end to a window sash and engaging by its edges in the grooves of said strips. i v
